One tip that I don't think has been mentioned yet would be to do as many missions as you possibly can. They might be locked for now or you might only have one or two slots (sorry, I can't remember), but once you can do them, they are the best source of income. I've been playing this game for a couple years now and missions are still my main source of income :)
Another warning would be to not get too carried away when buying / breeding / catching pets. Stables fill up faster than you might think and if your stable is full, pets in your hatchery automatically get released when they reach 28 days of age. It's possible to get them back but you need to pay 50 diamonds so it's better just to keep a careful eye on your stables.
