Honestly, at first I thought, when a pet was released, he or she went into the wild where someone else could catch him/her and I thought it was pretty cool knowing that my pets might re-surface one day lol, but later I found out that they currently just.... "poof" for the lack of better wording.... and part of me went "man, I'm a horrible pet owner" xD
I think the new system, for pet releasing sounds like it will be nice.
Now I feel really bad 0.o'
I thought until reading this they did resurface D:

I've released 2 or 3. And I hated myself every time for it. Except one. That bear was so hideously ugly it needed to go poof. It had been passed around the 'give an ugly pet' thread a few times; no one wanted him and he was just burning my eyes with his bad coloring...
I felt bad the other times though. I don't do it anymore. I've got pets that have been for sale for months for 1 gold. I'd rather keep my breeding habits under control so I can feed all the pets I have, even the for sale ones, rather than abandon anyone. Besides, it seems like almost every pet sells eventually! I just sold one today that had been up for free for like, 2 months at least. And someone finally saw him and loved him enough to take him. So its worth it.
I worry that the NPC adoption center is going to get overwhelmingly flooded.
Maybe if a pet does not sell within a month there, then they get released? So that there aren't like, literally a thousand Nixis to poke through since that could happen if people dump breeding project failures in there...

I feel like the time should be even shorter, perhaps a week. I'm sure A LOT of new pets are born every day.
I haven't released a pet yet, but it's probably going to happen soon. I keep every egg and hatchling I find in explore, and I plan to breed my favorites just because. And that's obviously going to take some space. Fortunately, I'm pretty picky about which pets I buy or capture.
The only two pets I'm considering releasing or selling would be this green, bone mask faelora (found a prettier one with the same mutation) and this newly hatched zolnixi with a pretty unappealing color scheme.

I didn't want to release them at first, but I'm really into the breeding part (my hatchery has 14 pages at the moment), so when you breed your pets a lot, you have no choice but to release some. And I like way too many of the species! xD
I'm a student with a debt, so I really don't have any real money to spend on this game right now. This makes it hard to get extra stables.
It does remain difficult for me to release named ones.

We are planning on adding an NPC service in the near future where you will be able to sell your unwanted pets to an NPC merchant for a small profit.
This way, not only can you at least get some gold from an unwanted pet, but you can also feel better in knowing that it will be going to 'someone else' instead of the wild.
You're gonna make sure the merchant doesn't abuse them, right? Humane treatment of animals is a cause I support in real life.

/releases pets 100 at a time
They'll like it more out in the wild instead of having to deal with my stinky butt on a regular basis anyway.

I get that some people need to clean out after a breeding project, but what really bothers me are the people that go and snap up a bunch of pets and then just release them. I recently had a bunch of adult pets sell, and they were almost instantaneously released. Like, you can see all of the genes and mutations, so why would you buy it if you weren't planning on keeping it? I'm sure there are other people out there that would much prefer to have the pet and nuture it rather just release it that quickly.
That could just be me though. Personally, I'm really looking forward to the adoption center. Maybe putting a limit on how many pets you can put in there at once though would be a good idea, to avoid people flooding it with 80 "failed" breeding projects.

@Complaincan,
If the pets you were referring to were snatched up by Omnomnom then that was the 'unwanted' pet removal acct Krin and Fai made to buy all pets 1k and under and release them due to the pet surplus problem.
On topic:
I used to feel so terrible about releasing pets... Especially the ny'vene fails from my breeding project, but recently I just kinda said forget it and started releasing them... But I still feel kinda bad about it

My sister told me that as soon as I started discussing it with her. However, I have seen it happen before, done by actual people that aren't admins. If you're looking for a specific gene or mutation for a breeding project, then it's a simple look before you buy thing. I'm not going to name names, but it's happened more than once to me before the clean out done by the admins.
