Buyer's don't get hit with a fee. xD The seller is the one who gets hit with the 5% transaction fee. :) The buyer just buys at the price listed by the seller.

It's also a stable gold sink, which any site like this needs to function.
Without some sort of gold sink in place, the amount of gold people have on hand would be to much, causing inflation as things would become easier and easier to obtain.
Having a percentage taken from sales is, like I said, a very stable system.
