Unfortunately I am one of those "mud puddle" people and I pray we haven't met in real life and caused this rant xD

I love betas and I've kept many before. I had the prettiest beta fish bowl that was round and had a nice lamp right over it. Unfortunately my mom didn't know you had to change the water (which I know needs to be done at least once a week but can be changed out if you stop changing the type of water they are in.) So she killed that beta -_-

Couple years later I got a plastic tank that was a couple gallons big with a divider so you could try and breed them. Lost the divider but I still wanted a beta and I found a very peaceful one at Petsmart (the less they dart around when you pick their cups up, the more docile they behave in the tank). I thought he was black the water he was in was so insanely dirty (He was a dragon-half moon hybrid, bought him because he was really calm, not because of the colors or anything like that)! When I put him in my tank, his colors came out and he was beautiful. His face turned out to be dark green with a jade green body. He had two small teal fins and a white and teal see-through tail. He was alive for a very long time and thrived in the tank. There was no heater or anything like that but he remained perfectly healthy.
My dad got me a tank for Christmas with a divider and a filter in it so I bought a cute white female with yellow fins and purple specks all over her body. I had to remove the divider in my tank because the male and female hated being apart. They never attacked each other, bred but followed each other all the time.

Lol no it wasn't you. I'm active on a betta forum and some facebook groups. I deal almost daily with people that make me want to steal their fish in the middle of the night and ban them from getting anymore.

I do have a few things to say about that though. Generally the fish are lethargic from cold temps and, depending how the care is at the store, suffering from ammonia poisoning which can seem like they are docile. Dragon is a colouration, referring to the thicker scaling. Halfmoon is a tail type, just like Veiltails, double tails, etc. Careful when using the word hybrid because there are wild species of betta that can, and have been, crossed to our domesticated bettas. A friend of mine in Cali found some hybrids at a pet store, they look much different than normal bettas.

Also the "following" you mentioned is actually a sign of aggression. The will chase and follow each other to "keep an eye" on the other so that they aren't surprise attacked. Males and females really shouldn't be together, even in the wild they only come together for a short time to mate and then the female moves on. When you had the babies did you have live foods and separate tanks for growing out ready? Or did they not make it/get eaten?

Betta breeding is not for the faint of heart or light of wallet. My friend started out last year, it cost her $600 for grow out tanks (four 10g), a rack, heat tape for the hundreds of cups/jars (You have to jar the males and some aggressive females), foods, meds, etc. She ordered a betta from Thailand as her foundation father (another probably $60 in shipping and transshipping). Her first spawn was over 500. She had to split the amount up because the male couldn't keep up with all the babies falling from the nest. She got about 200 old enough to sell (most went to pet stores), and managed to rehome all of them that she wasn't keeping for continued breeding.

later after reading more I didn't really want to breed them! luckily the filter prevented them from doing so because it would make a tiny current and it would blow the male couldn't build a bubble nest. If I could, I would show you the pictures of them together and they were very calm around each other.

I've heard that hybrids are not good. They are normally unhealthy or have deformities from what I've read so far. Dragon (what I named the green one) was a massive beta and had the face of a king beta. When the male and female were sharing a tank, there was a divider in it but they would both constantly push against the sides till they were together and then they'd stop panicking. I was afraid that by leaving out the divider the male would attack the female because he was so big and she was so small in comparison (excluding the fin size, he was still pretty big).
In the beginning, the male was rather aggressive towards her but despite giving her several warnings, she followed him around. He went after her once but she recoiled with a charge and stunned him. After that he just sort of gave up on trying to fight her and they became inseparable. Several times they were flanking each other.

Once they were together, they watched each other when they ate. The female would only eat when the food pellets fell on the ground and the male would eat the ones that would float at the top. Eventually he started to copy her and they would eat together when the pellets fell on the ground. They never fought over the food which made me happy.

One day the female's bladder began to swell but it wasn't very noticeable. Unfortunately I wasn't paying attention enough and she died :(
When she died, the male suddenly refused to eat and stopped swimming around the tank. He would pick at food but never actually ate it. Instead of swimming he would just kind of float around the tank and his scales turned from vibrant colors to black. I had never seen a beta act like that. He just gave up on living and died...
I had removed the female when she died and the water was cleaned before he died. Almost as soon as she was gone he stopped trying to swim on his own. (Occasionally he would swim to the top to breath and "consider" eating but then would kind of look at it and swim back to the bottom of the tank. He always stayed in the corner were the filter couldn't push him.

Interesting, I heard of a similar incident before. I guess they were just passive enough. I do worry when other people read stories like this though because I've seen it go bad so many times (not in person, usually see the aftermath when people reach out for help or ask why it happened). But I'm glad it worked out for you and your fish.

I did, but what I meant was that they didn't rip each other apart >.< you said they were together for quite a while, so I figured it was a better outcome than most would see. Sorry about that.

Anyways.

The new "Creamy Chocolate Chill" things at Tim Hortons suck :/ The way they looked and sounded was almost like a milkshake. You wanna know what they really are? A chocolate milk slushie with a plop of creamy stuff on top. I could make the same thing at home with a blender and not have to pay so much.

I agree with the Pokemon rant! It's so annoying, like, learn how to say it. 'Pokemans/Pokemanz' sounds kinda dumb. Just say Pokemon.

Because of Jelly, I remembered my old fishie.

I don't remember her breed, but she was black, and we named her Blackie. Now, I was pretty young at the time, probably maybe 7 or so I think. I loved Blackie, though, and she was extremely special. Not like the other fish, Blackie would follow my finger (I know this sounds extremely dumb but I was seven X3)

Blackie, in fact, trained herself to do so. And she was special to me as a dog is special to a kind dog owner. Before long I taught her many kinds of tricks, and we bonded more each day.

One day, Blackie died. I cried and cried and cried. No other fish will ever replace Blackie in my heart. I will always remember Blackie.
