Oh lord
So I've always been interested in computers (though now having worked with the hardware side, I think I'll stick to the programming bits)
But my parents always figured I had to either be a doctor or lawyer. They didn't take me well to me liking nerdy things because I'm female and they thought it was a waste of time. (Hahahaha)

Military also got pushed on me successfully because they wouldn't help me pay for college at all just for me to find out I hated that after a couple years in and my brother that also got pushed to go to med school (that they paid for) ended up dropping out of it.

So near the end of high school I was pretty adamant on not enlisting because l really just did not care for the military then. So I was looking into things like law enforcement, biology, and the art stuff. Things happened though and I lost that no-military fight with them and like 6 years of my time.
Drove my mother nuts since she considered law enforcement too dangerous and it's funny to me now that my younger brother is now trying to become a police officer and running into the same brick wall.

I've told people this before though, decide what you want to do on your own terms to avoid wasting your own time and money. Make sure you do your research into your fields and remember that no job is perfect and you have to be comfortable with a certain level of things you don't like as long as the rest of the work doesn't feel like a waste to you.

psh I'm giving life advice again it's always a good time to stalk that

Because it's a conversation Lark can relate to
"You be doctor lah"
"Uhh"
"Go be a nurse anesthetist, you get paid a lot for just sitting there"
"Um no"
"Then be lawyer"
"No thanks"
"Pharmacist?"
"Nope"
"Fine, follow your brother into the IT field, it'll be easier to get into Stanford because alumni or something, also you're a girl so it'll be easier"
"Um I don't like programming that much" *shoves Sylestia under Hackerrank window*
"Then tell me what you want if you can't decide"
"Journalism?"
"So lonely, you'll never get married traveling so much, plus it's not a STEM career"
"WHY ARE YOU CONSIDERING ME GETTING MARRIED ...Paramedic?"
*insert shocked stares from around the dining table* "... Too weak, you need to carry people"
"Pilot?"
"Too short" (Rip 4' 11" me and not getting any taller xD)
*repeatedly whacks head into wall* "I don't know, then, there's nothing I really like at the moment"
"Okay go be a nurse anesthetist then"

(yep, lark chose the best time to stalk, and this is really good life advice xD)

Yeah, I've been gradually getting more and more into computers, and its honestly true that literally no females usually do it...

I mean most of my friends in schools enjoy coding and game creation and stuff and I've started picking up bits and pieces from watching them code and giving them ideas. I find the hardware side interesting, but yeah I would agree that the programming bits are a lot cooler

Lol....
When the rest of your family and like its entirety are professors who make business proposals and go on business trips and you're just like the odd one out so they automatically go like, you should be a research doctor, oh maybe anesthesiology

honestly I'd go into forensics if my mental health wasn't a clusterbomb and a half

I want to go into game design too but I already know that's a pipedream and now I'm just trying to settle for software dev and not cry

honestly I've changed my mind on jobs like 50 times now
I'm just content doing whatever is the easiest on my dumb brain at this point

My bf has this problem too and he's in college and still not sure on a major
Honestly there's really no way to know other than messing around for a few years, I'm convinced

So um yeah rip me I like traveling and I'm basically Newt Scamander
My mom: "yOu'Ll nEvEr FiNd A hUsBaNd If YoU kEeP tRaVeLiNg"
My dad: "STEMSTEMSTEMSTEMSTEM" *shoves computer in face* "STEMSTEMSTEM"
My brother: Look ma, I got into Stanford
My mom: Big deal. Oh, and Honors English will only make your GPA go down or stay the same so let's make Lark take it, oh and also AP Physics freshman year sounds like a good idea, let's ask the counselor if they can't make an exception because her brother is a genius child
Me: "All I ever wanted to do was writeeeeee or you know something involving airports"
Also me: Hates music lessons, sports, and likes zero extracurricular activities
My brother: Tennis! Swimming! Let's start a CS club! Let's start a Science Bowl club! Let's go play piano in Carnegie Hall! Oh no, I got a full ride to UCSD but not one to Stanford, what do I do?

*sigh*

Pfft that was a weird rant

My brother applied to Harvard as a joke with his GI bill and got accepted just to go to a state school

Really I'm convinced they just want money

Also oh yeah my parents tried the "just go get married and find a man to support you"

I won't get too much into that one though since I'm not trying to trigger myself here tonight or get into anything too personal, so I'll just briefly footnote this with: my family should probably all be in prison, I am not giving any of them grandchildren when I'm already close to having custody of my sister's kids as is. =_=
Plus I don't care much for kids or being pregnant. Creeps me out and I have no patience, lol.

I also got to travel for a while, was fun, want good enough job to let me travel again. 10/10

I was looking into screenwriting briefly as an option and I figure if trying to learn computer science does me in completely with the math, I'd find my way into that. Writing at least always comes super easy to me and I feel like I'd get to meet a lot of different people.

Ahhh, meanwhile I'm here and my families assured that I'm probably never going to get married because that's just my personality, so they've given that up as an option...

I enjoy traveling to see places and such but I've never been a fan of doing it constantly...mostly because I can't sleep in hotels at all. I mostly travel places with my dad on his business trips since if you speak at it or are a famous enough member in the community they literally pay for you to come (so now we have a lot of mileage points...so I mean if I really want to travel, I could bug my sister into it because she's basically striving to do what my dad does, but in a different field...)

--when the school made you take pe so it drops your GPA xD--
Ahh, I have a whole rant with extracurriculars and stuff like that, like my parents made me drop orchestra so next year I literally am taking all ap classes...

and honestly all my ec's are so scattered, I play violin and piano (badly), I'm part of academic team (only because I can power on mythology and religion so my team is guaranteed 75 points per round), science team (but I never stick with one event so whoops), TSA (but your events are children story, board game design, and video game design), mock trial, the coding club (but you're just there to test everything and fix their stupid errors and help them with art/design) but you aren't good at anything, you're just kinda there so whoops

speaking of which..I'm so not prepared for this piano audition, I haven't even filled at the form yet

I just went to a Chicago public school so I've already accepted I have no chance academically since my school was so extremely underfunded and we had no real clubs or anything outside of sports.
My family isn't dirt poor persay but it's sad because my parents never went to college and never really tried with either me or my brother despite us being considered 'genius' level.

I just think it's all a joke, personally and it's just good to find your own type of skillset. I mean, I personally pick up on many things quickly and easily but really only things I like are science, tech (depends), and art/writing that really hold me, so that's where my skills are at.
Even then I feel like trash at what I do, but eh, whatever. As long as I enjoy it, it's fine to me. I figure I don't need to be the best at what I do because there's always going to be someone better than me.

(There is a sociology theory on that btw but I can't remember the name of it currently, basically states that with any skill there is always going to be a very narrow margin of people who are extremely naturally proficient (like 10%) in it and the more you do a skill, it's harder to master it because you are now competing at the levels of these people.)
