Day Three - Continued (VII)

Alena, according to the paper, should be on channel two. You switch over, the static cutting out and returning quickly.

"Hello?" you ask.

It's clear to you that her end of the line is operating; you can hear the familiar sounds of the forest on the other side: birds chirping, insects buzzing, the breeze in the tree leaves. But no human voice.

"Anyone hear me?"

Nothing. Well... Perhaps she'd set it down someplace for a moment or two? You try speaking up a bit, but there is still no reply.

The next channel to come to mind is channel seven, which you attempt to contact next. The note says this one belongs to someone called June.

Immediately, a high-pitched whining screams through the device, as if the most terrible feedback loop has just exploded somewhere. You fumble to switch it off, your ears ringing. What in the world could that have been...? Perhaps June's line is down...damaged? Maybe? A little worried now, you turn to the remaining names. There has to be someone out there.

There are three left:

Ezra - Channel 4
K.D. - Channel 1
Eli - Channel 5

If none of these work, you might as well begin panicking. The thought of being completely cut-off from human contact in such a vicious wilderness is more frightening to you than you want to admit.

Try contacting channel 4, 1, OR 5

Day Three - Continued (VIII)

You take a deep breath, internally telling yourself to calm down. Taking the device, you switch over to channel one.

"Anyone there?"

Nothing. Nothing. Your heart sinks. There's--

"Riv...?" a soft voice replies.

Relived, you quickly respond: "No, no. His cousin. You're K.D., right?"

"Y-Yeah..."

You frown. He doesn't sound...alright.

"Where are you?" you slowly ask.

"Dunno. I-- I dunno. It's so dark."

It's high morning.

"So dark..." he repeats. "Hurts..."

"Oh my-- What happened?"

K.D. mumbles something you can't quite hear, and then: "They're all gone."

Your heart feels cold; you already know who he's talking about. The other wardens...

"Riv's gone," you blurt out.

At this, K.D.'s mostly lifeless responses are interrupted by the hitch in his voice. "No...no, no, he--" He breaks off, breathing heavily and coughing. "Riv can't-- He can't..."

"Hey, hey, breathe," you instruct, listening to him begin to hyperventilate. "K.D., please- what did you do last?"

K.D. sucks in a few deep breaths before continuing to speak. "I... I was planting... Saplings, down across from the stream. Maybe a mile out from the cabin."

"Do you remember anything else?"

K.D. coughs again. "Just that it was quiet. Couldn't hear myself breathe. Then it was so... So heavy... And when I opened my eyes again, I was here. Just darkness."

"You can't see anything?"

"Just darkness," he repeats, wheezing through another cough. You don't like how it sounds.

"How long...?"

"I dunno," is all he says.

You frown. Surely, it couldn't have been long? According to Tellus, Riv had only been missing for a few days.

When K.D. finishes coughing, you finally ask: "Are you sick?"

"Hole."

"Hole?"

"It's...small, in comparison. Through the lung."

Holes. Holes in the tree, holes in Eshmelle.

"Not bleeding, nothing... Nothing happening... Just there. Hurts. Feel like there's fire in my throat."

K.D. is alone in the dark, somewhere, injured. To say things are not going well for him would be an understatement.

"Listen, I--"

"There's nothing you can do," K.D. speaks, and he sounds surprisingly firm. "Just stay alive and away from here, or they'll get you too."

"They'll what? K.D., you aren't--"

K.D.'s suddenly softened voice cuts through your sentence, and this time, there is something raw and fearful ingrained in his words. "Oh...oh moons, it's... It's terrible, I... I've gotta go. Get out. Anywhere."

The line clicks to static as he shuts it off.

You shout at it, you try ten different ways to get the signal back, but there is nothing. There are no other wardens. K.D.'s out there. He's out there. You...you can save him, right? But... Those Wailers... Those doors, and who knows what else... He told you to get out.

In an attempt to be rational, you think it over. Riv is gone. The others are gone. It's possible that the Wailers- or whatever- took K.D. someplace. Is there a possibility Riv is in a similar state? But that darkness and lack of its description... You don't even know where to begin to look. There is a map, yes, but it seems that other things are in play here. Dangerous things.

Help K.D. OR Try to find a safe way out
