I found a few ways, I think o: I have like zip experience with Violin so immense searching is needed xux;;
- Did you ever get your bow re-haired? Maybe it needs a change (generally, it costs $50)?

- If the bow itself is sliding/squeaking, your bow hairs are worn out, I guess. If it's a student bow, it'll be cheap to replace, unless you want a really fine bow for $150 - $200.

Well, remember; Violin is one of the most difficult instruments to learn to play. Even if you're an experienced Violin player, you'll still make squeaks every so often :> Practice for a while to get a tune! Or maybe take a break, like I do when I fail miserably at a video game, and then go back calm and refreshed and do it again in hopes of perfecting it.

Again, I'm not even a newbie at this, I'm more of a complete stranger touching this wooden instrument with strings tied on it xux;;

Well, it's a difficult instrument to learn how to play~? I don't think I even touched a violin after hearing it squeak the one time I tried to play it when I was 14 x_x;;

You'll eventually get better at it, so don't worry about it. One of my favourite Kpop singers play the violin too!

Ah... I know the notes well... I play the piano too, so I know the notes. And I know I am holding it right... My hands are in the right position... Fingers on right string... But still squeaks and screeches...
Since I am new at it, I am only playing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". But my friend is a expert at playing. She plays really well, but when she played MY violin, it sounded like screeching too.

I played violin for a while. Screeching can be caused by a few different things. Try altering the force with which you apply your bow to the strings. You need just the right amount of tension to generate that nice, rich vibration of sound. It's also possible for a newly-strung bow to cause excessive screeching until the horsehair gets worn in. If you think that's the problem, just rosin the heck out of it and play some rousing fiddle music, uptempo and fast; it'll mellow in no time.

If neither one of these things solve the problem, the only other thing I can think of is to switch from steel strings to gut. Gut is more expensive, doesn't last as long, and has to be tuned more often; but it always produces a richer, more mellow sound.

Good luck!

I play the cello so you Could be putting the bow in the wrong spot/angle in between the bridge and the finger board... Like instead of your bow being perpendicular to the finger board it's tilted up to a 45 degree angle. Another problem could be you are pressing too hard and not moving your bow cleanly across the string. OR, and this is my favorite one, you could have crap strings (the color of the string tying to the tuners at the bottom of your violin determines how good your strings are. Red=worst, Blue=okay, White= Good and blue+gold= best)

Another explanation is that you're new to playing the instrument... It takes time don't worry ^.^ 6 years of playing the cello has taught me well... I'm happy to hear you are taking up an orchestra instrument... you'll love it :)

Obviously (or maybe not so obvious) from my username, I have no real experience with string instruments. xD
However, if an instrument isn't making a tone you like, always relax yourself and reposition yourself to play. I don't think any musician would be happy to play all stiff up onto their instrument.

Go back to your fundamentals as a violin player, not a pianist, and relax your posture/shoulders/arms/hands. And of course, if you have a music teacher or instructor, you can always ask them about your predicament. o:

I have been playing violin for a while, and actually there is one in my lap right now! Ok so you have tried rosining it, but not to much! If the bow is too attached to the violin, then get a cloth, and wipe that bow clean! Also try having you bow parallel to the bridge to make it more affective, and since it is pretty new, just try fiddling the heck out of it! It always helps! As a fiddler, my bows are very strong, and i dont know what kind you have, so go easy on it! Try wiping the strings down on your violin. Since you are putting rosin on it, there might be some rosin stuck on there! If you have a violin cloth, wipe it down good! And dont worry, if you are running the strings with the bow, and it makes a a screeching sound, that means that it did have too much rosin on it! Hope this helps!
