How is a rare pet different? Every time I catch one it has one visible gene and no carries, which is exactly the same as an uncommon. I caught an epic once, but don't remember what it had. Is he difference in stats or something?
Also, I have two aurleons with a visible in the same spot. But no matter what they always inherit the mothers gene. Why is this?

Did you give them a genetic test? Carried don't always show up, unless you test them.
For the aurleons: I suggest you visit this thread - it's packed with info that might help you understand the gene dynamics. http://www.sylestia.com/forums/?thread=16264
Hope that helped! :)

rarity is in the color of stars of wild sylesti
/made that guide myself a long time back aha
the thing is, the systems of genopoints (visibles and carries) between the new systems (zones with maps, like astryl's vale and festival zones) and old systems (no maps, like umbra forest and viridian meadows) are different.
Uncommon: 1vis in the old zones (2gp), 1carry in the new zones (1gp)
Rares: 1vis1carry in old zones (3gp), 2carry OR 1vis in new zones (2gp)
Epics: 2vis in old zones, 4carry OR 1vis2carry OR 2vis in new zones (4gp for both)
and so on
as for the two aurleons with visible in the same spot, it's because traits work with dominance and recessiveness.
for example:
Mom has AC in gene 3. (Advanced Runes vis, hidden Galaxy Stripes)
Dad has BD in gene 3. (Lucky Runes vis, hidden Flame Runes)
Since breeding works like a punnett square:
thanks wonder for pointing it out xD
The combination that baby got in gene 3 is CD (vis Galaxy Stripes, hidden Flame Runes).

The amount of genetic points for the rarity differs based on whether the pet is found in the old system (Viridian Meadows/ Umbra forest) or new system (Astryl's Vale). Visible traits are worth 2gp, and carried traits are worth 1gp.
In the old system (Viridian Meadows/ Umbra forest):
Uncommon - 2gp (1 vis OR 2 carries)
Rare - 3 gp (1 vis and 2 carries OR 3 carries)
Epic - 4 gp (2 vis OR 1 vis and 2 carries OR 4 carries)
In the new system (Astryl's Vale):
Uncommon - 1 gp (1 carry)
Rare - 2 gp (1 vis OR 2 carries)
Epic - 4 gp (2 vis OR 1 vis and 2 carries OR 4 carries)
Legendary - 8gp (4 vis OR 3 vis and 2 carries OR 2 vis 4 carries)
Mythical - 12gp (6 vis)
The thing about carried traits is that you won't be able to see them unless you genetically test the pet. To do so, you have to use a genetic testing kit. There are one-time use testing kits in the trade broker, or you can get the unlimited use testing kit from the diamond shop. Alternatively, if you go to the breeding forum, there are people who offer free testing services.
Once your pet is tested, you would then be able to see the carries it has. Most likely the reason why you feel the rare and uncommon pets are the same is because your pets are not tested, so you cannot see the extra carried trait the rare pets have.
A baby will get 1 trait from the mother, and 1 trait from the father. If the trait from the parents are different, the dominant trait will be visible, and the non-dominant trait will be hidden (but is still possible to pass on to the next generation)
So for example, if the mother is AA, and the father is BB, the baby will always be AB, where the A trait is visible, and the B trait is not shown, but can be passed down.
To know if there are any hidden traits (eg AB or AA), you need to genetically test the pet.

Ok, I think I understand now. (Genetics are way too complicated for me!) Thanks for all the answers :)

I just want to clear something up about the rarity in the newer zones :)
Legendary pets have 6 GP assigned and can be either 3 vis, 1 vis 4 carry, 2 vis 2 carry or 6 carry.
Mythical pets have 8 GP assigned and can be either 4 vis, 2 vis 4 carry or 3 vis 2 carry.
I know about the mythical gene points from my own experience :) I caught a mythical firestarter vulnyx during summer fest :)

I've never met a legendary/mythical before, so that was info I heard from others a while back. =P
