I used a mutation filter on one of my pets, but nothing happened. What does that mean?

I assume you mean a "Lesser Genetic Mutator". When you use one of them on a tamed pet, it gives the pet a random trait in a slot where nothing is carried/vis. In your case, LGM probably gave it a carried which you have to test the pet to see it
