I don't even know where to start with this thread ^^;
WORK IN PROGRESS

Backstory

As the title says, I'm working on creating an indie game. I recently purchased GameMaker Studio 2 and have been spending an incredible amount of time on it. The simplicity of it has created a lot of ambition in my mind, solely because I thought coding a game would have a huge learning curve.

There were several games I grew up with, and they were mostly indie games. Oneshot and Undertale (unremarkably) were the two big "parents" of my ideas. Other smaller inspirations include Night in the Woods and Detroit: Become Human. If you are interested in any of those games and interested in helping me create my game, I'd love to have you on this thread.

Helpers

I would only feel comfortable creating this game if I had tons of criticism and support. This thread is my attempt at gaining those two things. Helpers would:

Listen to OSTs and give criticism/compliments
Polish the main story
Create character ideas, which may be added to the game
Offer advice on coding (if proficient with GMS2)

The Basic Story

Surprisingly, the story is the least developed part of my project. I have a few things I aim to have, however:

Characters that the player has an emotional attachment to
Puzzle/bullet hell elements
Fourth wall breaking
Difficult choices and consequences for those decisions
Humanoid monsters as NPCs. This is a must, as it adds far more variety into the game.

As well as ideas I already have:

In games, you control the main character. You make decisions for them, and force them what to do. I'm hoping in this game, I can make the main character aware of you, and resist decisions they disagree with.

Conclusion

All in all, this is a very large undertaking that will take a lot of time. I feel like I have so much to live up to, looking at the intricacy and emotional connections in games like Undertale and Oneshot. This game will most likely take years to create, as well as a perfect balance of ambition and ability on my part, and I'm not sure if I can live up to it. However, I'm hopeful.

If you'd like to be pinged whenever I make large updates, I can add you to the ping list. However, anyone can drop something in here. I'd love to hear everything ^^

Ping List (Main): Yamii, Lovelock, Wisiro, Sugarrxoxo, Larkien, Alstoxen, Spireofbone, Auria, Whiterosealliance, Latif, Grapejuice
Ping List (Artist): Spireofbone, LemonSoul, Auria, Grapejuice
Ping List (Critique): Yamii, Latif

Updates
When an update is posted, everyone of the pinglist will be pinged. Updates will follow a basic form and summarize the work I've done and added to the game. This includes music, coding, and story/character work.

Right this sounds AWESOME. I would love to help make characters since I spend 6 hours a day doing that already! What's the plot, because it sounds to me like some sort of hellish based game and I may have an idea or three!
Maybe the plot could be like:
Hell and the real world a split by an unbreakable barrier, or so we thought. Somehow, ripped, causing mayhem to pour into the real world. So, in a rush to stop the danger, the humans gathered a duo of a strong human (main character) and a powerful good demon. The two have to work together to stop the queen demon (the queen bee of the nest) and prevent the end of the human world. The only thing is, the main character, is slowly getting polluted by the queen, so as the story goes on the main character resists your decisions more and more.

I can already say I didn't expect this many people already. Two is a lot to me ^^;

I've got a few ideas that I've thrown together over time.

The character knows (at least at some point) that they are being controlled by you. Think Oneshot, but more malicious and unhappy about it. Unlike Oneshot, however, you can sometimes override what the character wants and make them do what you want. There's a limit to this, however (think software instability from DBH).

The main character is a robot, created by putting a dead creatures spirit/soul into a mechanical body. Robots don't have memories from their previous soul. However, the main character is the exception. Their original body was destroyed in the miasma and recovered by their father, one of the scientists who created the robots. This also twists him in the future, as you'll see.

The game worlds main problem is the miasma. The miasma corrupts creatures that enter it, destroying or twisting them. The robots are still affected, but less so, as they don't have a body to corrupt, only a spirit/soul.

The scientists don't know why the robots work. They know that the robots don't retain memories from their previous lives and usually follow directions. This is actually because the robots are empty vessels, and are susceptible to being controlled by outside forces (ex. the person playing the game, or the miasma itself)

I actually thought this idea was interesting because in a lot of RPG games you blindly follow the directions that NPCs give you.

As far as the hell idea, I'd like the game to remain pretty lighthearted. Deep and sad sometimes, but lighthearted nonetheless. The idea sounds great though, maybe I would dip into that at future date ^^

Oh, so the miasma is somewhat like a "link" to our world? Via which the player is able to gain control? If I got that wrong just correct me XD But it would be interesting since our human world is the definition of corruption.

Additionally, are these robots more humanoid in nature, or just monstrous? And would they be polished and in top condition or just makeshift?

You got it ^^

I've put a lot of my life into this game. It started as a lighthearted thing and changed as I started to use it like a coping mechanism. The miasma seemed to be fitting representation.

The person playing the game is a third party, almost. You've got the player, myself, and the character being controlled all affecting the game somehow.

As of now, no- however, I am curious about the manifestation of the miasma in the game's world- does it hold some sort of form, is it stationary, etc.

Ah, ok, have to say that is a cool idea. And honestly, I would defiantly play it. But what would the robots look like and what would inside the miasma be like?
