Parties typically consist of Tank, Healer, and Attacker (though obviously there are other setups, that's the main one)

Tank elements (slot 1 of party) are typically Water, Shadow, or Earth (but Light is also capable)- Elements that can take damage and heal themselves, defending the rest of the party

Healers are Light (an alternate option is having a Water pet as a Buffer, though this isn't common)- Light is the only element that can consistently heal other party members. Water can get in on that a bit with Ice Sphere and Ice Barrier, but Light does it as natural course of its offensive attacks which is handy.

Attackers are Air and Fire (Shadow can substitute but isn't typically used as one)- With stats put into offense and dexterity, Air is a fierce one-enemy attacker and Fire is a Mob-sweeper

Earth, Air, and Fire are the elements that have a pretty rigid battle position:
Earth are solidly a Tank element, as they're Taunters- drawing enemy attacks to themselves-, can't heal other party members, and aren't designed for dealing out massive damage.

Air and Fire meanwhile have no moves that buff their defensive/evasive abilities and no moves that debuff enemy offensive capabilities or accuracy, nor any self-healing outside of Mend- They're dedicated out-and-out Attackers to the core.

A Shadow/Water/Earth team (best reorganized as Earth Tank/ Water Buffer /Shadow Attacker, probably) would presumably be serviceable but possibly not optimal, a survivalist kind of team perhaps? I've never used that setup so I can't say)
