~PROLOUGE~
The young prince stood in the mouth of the cave. A fire-red sky illuminated the mountain range behind him. He stepped forward a few steps. Every five steps his leather boots brushed together. He ducked behind a rock, looking over it.
The Dragon Queen, Ellanora, slept soundly just a few yards away from him. Three eggs were cradled by her stomach, giving off warm glows of purple, blue, and silver.
He stood, taking a deep breath and walking to the center of the cave. "Ellanora. I've come for the eggs."
The Dragon Queen raised her small black head, growling faintly. "So soon? They're just born, Roman."
Roman placed one hand on the hilt of his sword, narrowing his eyes. "You should be grateful we're only taking your sons, Ellanora."
She growled again. "Grateful," she scoffed, tossing her head. "I should be grateful that you're taking my sons?"
"And leaving you with an heiress, yes."
"Where will they go, Roman? Will you be the caretaker? Rosetta? Scott?"
"They will go to Aquaria."
Ellanora stood, her claws scraping on the ground and growled. "Aquaria? That's no place for dragons to live."
"You know as well as I that they will be kept in their human forms. They'd be a danger otherwise."
"And when they find out about their heritage?"
"I will return them to you, under an oath."
"An oath?"
Roman dipped his head, his sky-blue eyes flashing. "An oath that they shall never be used against the humans who raised them, or any other humans."
Ellanora nodded slowly, her berry-blue eyes flicking toward her three eggs. "Very well," she growled finally. She scooped up two of the eggs, depositing them gently by Roman's feet. She nuzzled them.
"I will see you soon, my angels."
She looked at Roman. "What of their marriage? If they marry a human, what will they do?"
Roman stayed silent for a long moment, then said, "They will be shown to Equatia, and if they so desire... They will stay here. Or they will go back to their spouse."
Ellanora nodded again. "Very well," she repeated. "Take them. Guard them with your life. If something would happen to them- if they would die-"
Ellanora broke off, raising her head and keening to the sky, lamenting the pain of the thought that she might lose her sons.
Roman placed a hand on her neck. "I assure you they will be kept safe, Your Majesty."
Ellanora looked at him, her eyes flashing. "Then go."
She pressed one talon against Roman's chest and pressed the eggs against his leg.
In a flash of bright light, the prince and the eggs disappeared. Ellanora turned back to her last egg, the silver one.
"My daughter, you will be a queen to avenge your brothers." |
