It took me a long time to get past him as well. I just overlevelled my pets xD
First, you should change Ari's relic to one supporting Magical Damage, since Shadow is a Magical element. Also, reset Ari's proficiency points to health and agility. This will help her tank and keep your party alive.
While battling, focus on defeating Desius first, rather than attacking his minions. Use Explosive Firebolt to keep the Arch Mages at bay.

Did you activate any of the tomb seals before you tried fighting him? If not, thats one of the biggest reasons youre having so much trouble beating him. The more of the seals you activate, the less powerful he is. This thread explains what to do: https://www.sylestia.com/forums/?thread=55951&page=1
