I crawl back into bed and pull the blankets over my head. I anxiously stare at my phone, waiting for a text back.

You suddenly hear a low, creaking sound from the ceiling, almost as though somebody was sneaking around from above you. It couldn't have been somebody you knew because the creaky attic floor was well known among everyone who'd ever known you.

I toss my phone aside, giving up on waiting for a text back from my best friend. I slowly slide my head out from beneath my comforter, grab a sneaker from next to my bed, and chuck it at the ceiling of my room before retreating back underneath my blankets.
