* ~ Prologue ~ *

Moonlight trotted merrily out of the Thunderclan camp.
Today was Halfmoon and he would meet up with the other Medicine Cats. With his tail he waved at Starpaw, his apprentice: "Come Starpaw, the others must be waiting already". Moonlight was still a young tomcat, and yet he had decided to take Starpaw as his apprentice.
The young cat caught up with her mentor quite fast, before she excitedly walked beside him. With a smirk he looked at his apprentice. She had learned a lot in the past few moons. It wouldn't take to long for her to become a full-fledged Medicine Cat of the Thunderclan herself.

At the border to the Windclan, they met Skystream and Moonlight gave her a small tap with the tip of his tail to greet her: "Hello Skystream. How is the prey in Windclan?". After she had returned his greeting, the female Medicine Cat answered: "Thanks. In Windclan everything is alright. A few stepped in thorns and some scratches, but they occur more often and with a few herbs, they are all better in no time. This year the Leafbare is really mild. I hope it will be the same in the next to come", she added with a glance to the starry sky.
Thoughtful Moonlight looked up as well: "Yes, this year Newleaf began earlier than normal. Lets just hope it will be the same after the next Leafbare".

In the meantime, Foghaze, the Medicine Cat of the Riverclan and Lightsight, the Medicine Cat of the Shadowclan had arrived as well.
Starpaw was talking with the Medicine Cat apprentice of the Shadowclan. Duskpaw became an apprentice not long ago. She was learning just a few moons so far, yet she and Starpaw had become good friends already. Happily with his tail wagging, Moonlight watched his apprentice. "One day, she will become a good mentor herself. She's patient and it's easy for her to explain something", he thought to himself, as Lightsight grumpily mentioned: "Lets go finally! We had wasted enough of the Moonlight already".

When they arrived at the pond, they immediately crouched down to drink a few sips of the cold water, which tasted like liquid Starlight. Moonlight felt the used sensation of cold spreading through his body, until he slowly opened his eyes.

He found himself at an unknown place.
Confused he looked around as he thought: "This isn't the usual place we share tongues with the Starclan. But where am I?". He stood at the top of a snowy hill. All around him the ice was glistening and he could see blueish and cliff-like mountains. As he let his gaze wander a second time, he saw a cat with shaggy and dark grey fur, which wasn't there before. Starlight shimmered in her fur. At first he didn't recognize her, but then he asked surprised: "Yellowfang?".

The cat nodded and came up to him. He already had heard quite a lot about her. Once she was the Medicine Cat of the Shadowclan, before she had joined Thunderclan. When she had arrived in front of him, he bowed his head respectful. While she was walking to him, she had answered: "Of course I am me. Who else should I be?!". "Yes, I already had heard about her sharp tongue as well", he thought to himself and shrugged his whiskers in amusement. Unexpectedly he realized another, dark grey cat, which was standing next to Yellowfang all of a sudden.

"Hello", meowed Cinderpelt: "We have a message for you". Astound he looked at both of the Starclan Medicine Cats, until Yellowfang pointed one of her paws towards the sky. "See, and we'll show you what this all is about", she meowed.

Curious he looked up. First, he only saw the Silverpelt in the sky. But. Didn't the stars just move? Spellbound he took a closer look. Yes, the stars were moving! They whirled faster and faster until he felt as if he were in a blizzard. Only now he realized, he wasn't freezing even with all this snow and ice around him.

When he concentrated again on the swirling stars, he thought he could see some cats wandering through the blizzard. But before he could be sure they had vanished again. Suddenly he felt pelts brush against his fur and looked around. The unfamiliar cats didn't seem to notice him and the vision was really blurry. He couldn't see them well. He only knew they were cats. They came from different directions and met in the middle. Somehow it reminded Moonlight of the Great Gatherings, but surely this wasn't the place where it was held usually. Confused he looked back at the storm of whirling stars when he heard Cinderpelt's voice in his ear:

"Lost they will get in the crowd.
Four united in snow and ice.
Two times two will accomplish great.
In a new place will be found well-known.
Once they were here, now they are gone.
What is scattered, they will integrate.
A star escorts them silent and nice
and keeps watch on the luminous sky"

With these words echoing in his ears, Moonlight awoke in this Halfmoon night.

He shook his head to wake up completely and looked around for the other cats. Foghaze, Skystream and Lightsight looked as confused as he felt. Even Duskpaw peered at her mentor in astonishment. Only Starpaw looked around happily and didn't seem to realize the confusion of the others.

When they went on the way back, the words of the prophecy still echoed in Moonlights ears. What does that mean: "Four united in Snow and Ice"?. He looked around. Certainly, the Leafbare could sometimes be really hard and long and snow covered the ground. But it wasn't dangerous. All clans managed to feed themselves and even the Greencough had spared the clans in the last few Leafbares. Were they threatened by a hard time? No. This place was nowhere in the territories of the clans. Even all around them could no place like this be found.

Still lost in his thoughts he told the other Medicine Cats goodbye at the border and went back to the Thunderclan camp with Starpaw.

* ~ Chapter 1 ~ *

Flakesblossom contentedly laid on her side and looked at the little kittens. They were her first litter and she proudly licked their small heads.

When the entrance to the Nursery darkened for a moment, she looked up. Hello Fogstar. Nice you come for a visit, she greeted her Leader. Moonlight told me you got your kittens and you would be well enough to receive visitors, he answered her as he had a look at the little kittens and added: These are beautiful kits, congratulation! You and Meadowpelt must be proud. Do they already have names?. After she had a proud look at her litter, she licked the head of one kit after the other, while telling him their names: This grey one with white ears is Windkit, the bluegrey one with white spots is Rainkit and this one is Starkit, because her white spots remind me of the stars, she told after licking the head of a silver striped tabby with white nose, breast and paws with long fur. She had white spots throughout her stripes which really reminded one of snowflakes or stars.

A light brown tomcat with dark brown spots showed up at the entrance and nodded respectful at the sight of his Leader. I'll let you rest now, Flakesblossom, meowed the Leader at her and added on his way out to the tomcat: Congratulation, Meadowpelt. He gave him a friendly flick on the shoulder with his tail, before exiting the Nursery. Thank you, answered Meadowpelt, before walking to Flakesblossom and his kittens, to look after them.

It was the middle of Newleaf and the plants everywhere grew new sprouts and started blooming. Now the Thunderclan had three new and strong kits and enough food. Twolegs kept their distance to their territory as usual ans the Thunderclan had no worries at the moment. But not only the Thunderclan. All Clans enjoyed a harmonious time.

Fogstar sat down in the middle of the camp and looked around. The Elders enjoyed the sun near the rock wall next to a brambleberry bush, the Mentors called their Apprentices for training, the hunting patrol came back while the border patrol went on their way. Moonlight sorted his stock of herbs at his den and all cats looked healthy and happy.

Pleased he trotted to the nicely filled fresh-kill pile, chose a Thrush and sat down with his older Warriors to eat together with them. Sparkdances kits came back after a stroll with their mother and rollicked about. Satisfied he thought that it was time to announce some new Apprentices, soon. Everything was peaceful in the Clan.

It was still early in the morning. The sun just rose at the sky when Fogstar was awoken by a panicked scream. Well knowing his sleep after the great gathering was already over now, he walked to the camp clearing where he found Flakesblossom. She looked at him all desperate. Those three disappeared again! I looked everywhere Meadowpelt is in front of the thorn wall to search for any track of their smell Where could they have run off now?, she meowed while shaking her head. Fogstar twitched his tail. Half angry and half amused.

Flakesblossoms three kits had grown fast. By now it was Greenleaf and the kits would be old enouh to be Apprentices, soon. Constantly they came up with new ideas to keep the Clan busy. First they were hunting, than they tried to chase away a fox, luckily never finding it. After that they wanted to hold a border patrol of their own. What could they had thought off this time?

After he calmingly laid his tail on Flakesblossoms shoulder he turned to his Warriors. The border and hunt patrols leave now and hold an eye open for the kits. Come back and inform us, if you find something. The others join me to search for them. Queens with their kits and the Elder stay here and two Warriors should stay as well to guard the Camp, he ordered his Clan and flicked his tail to gather some Warriors around him before they left the Camp.

Right when he came back with his search patrol, he heard Meadowpelt scolding loudly. In assumption he had found the kits, he dismissed his Warriors and went to him. I don't care what you had done this time. You are not allowed to leave Camp You are still kits! Not even the Apprentices leave the Camp without a notice!, Meadowpelt scolded his kits and threatened: If you can't behave yourselves, you are not allowed to visit the Elders and listen to their Stories For several sunrises!. But I love it when Badgerclaw tells us his stories!..., meowed Starkit piped down whereupon her father just meant: Then stick to the rules from now on!.

If you can't follow the rules, I can't appoint you to Apprentices, Fogstar chimed in with Meadowpelt and winked at him. The kits looked shamefaced at their paws. Then Rainkit lifted his head and asked cheeky: If we behave ourselves, can we be Apprentices right now? We promise to never do something again!. After his words Windkit and Starkit looked up to their Leader with shining Eyes. He answered: First you have to show me, that I can believe you. If you do what your mother tells you for the next moon, I will think about it. After that he asked casually: By the way What's your excuse this time?.

Starkit pressed forward. He hadn't seen the plants she were carrying, because she had stood in the back the whole time. Proudly she meowed: I heard Moonlight when he sorted his herbs. He said he needed more Coltsfoot, but there was nobody around to help him carry it. So we went to get it for him. Amused Fogstar bent down to Starkit. This wasn't by any chance your idea, was it? And by the way this looks suspiciously like a Dandelion to me..., he meowed with a flick of his tail to Dandelion growing near them. Looking confused from one plant to the other, Starkit murmured: And I was sure to have gotten the right plant....

With a friendly nod Fogstar meowed: Now come and bring Moonlight your Dandelion. Maybe it can still be useful to him. Happily and with her tail lifted up high Starkit ran to Moonlights Den, followed by her brothers.

A moon passed and Fogstar had talked to Flakesblossom, telling her it wouldn't be much longer until he could announce her kits as Apprentices. Right the next sunhigh, when he wanted to go hunting with some of his Warriors, he heard Flakeblossoms worried cry again. Quietly sighting he turned back and run towards her. Did they disappear again?, he asked her until he realized Rainkit and Windkit right next to her. No, just Starkit is missing Not even these two had realized she went away Normally she never goes anywhere without them..., meowed Flakesblossom worried. This time the two kits really looked clueless to where their sister has gone. Right when he wanted to sent out a new search patrol, Starkit entered proudly the Camp with a few herbs in her mouth.

When Flakesblossom wanted to scold her daughter, Fogstar held her back with his tail. Can I talk to her? She's older now and maybe she will listen to me, he meowed with more belief in his voice than he felt. Flakesblossom nodded at him and gathered Windkit and Rainkit to bring them back to the Nursery.

Fogstar brought Starkit out of the way to a sunny spot and sat down comfortably before he addressed her: Why did you leave the Camp this time? And don't tell me Moonlight has sorted his herbs again. He just went with one of the Warriors to the abandoned Twoleg-Nest to get some Catnip and told me he had enough of all his herbs.... Confident the small kit sat up straight and looked into his eyes while telling him proudly: I brought more Yarrow and Alfalfa, and added: Moonlight needs these urgently. Fogstar mustered Starkit. It was obvious that she meant each word as she said it.

And who told you he would need exactly these herbs? And how are you sure they are the right ones?, he asked her. Happily purring she told him: I thought I was asleep, but when I opened my eyes there was no one in the Camp beside me and a tortoiseshell cat. At first I was a bit scared, but she smelled like Thunderclan and was really nice to me. After some thinking she added: I believe her name was Spottedleaf.

Fogstar looked confused at the kit. Spottedleaf was once a Medicine Cat of the Thunderclan. She died many seasons ago when the Thunderclan still lived in it's old territory in the Forest. How could the kit had met her? Dubiously he looked at her. Maybe she just had had a dream after all...

However the small kit continued happily: She was really nice to me and Fogstar, do you know? She had stars in her pelt. Just like Mama always tells me about my spots. But hers did really shine!. Shine?, asked Fogstar and looked confused at her. Starkit looked reverent in the distance, as if she would see all of this right in front of her eyes. Yes, they shone!, she nodded excitedly, but went serious all of a sudden. She told me that some kits in the Thunderclan would be in danger, if I didn't find these plants I thought she might mean my brothers, so I hurried as fast as I could But last time I mixed up the herbs and got the wrong ones After I told her that, she calmingly licked my head and showed me how the plant would look like and where I could find them. After that I woke up again and immediately ran to fetch the herbs, she ended her tale and asked unsure: She told me it was urgent, that's why I ran out immediately Was it wrong to listen to her?.

Deep in thought Fogstar answered absent-mindedly: No if it really was Spottedleaf, you have done the right thing but.... But?, Starkit asked unsure. Fogstar looked at her and after some thinking he brought her to Moonlight. He looked quite surprised when he saw Starkit coming to him with the herbs, followed by their Leader.

After he had listened to her story, he turned to Fogstar: It is true that I don't have any more Alfalfa and I used most of the Yarrow for Stagfurs tail wound. Both herbs can be used to make a cat feel nauseous. But why should we need them urgently? No cat has a stomach ache and no one would be stupid enough to eat Crowfood and spoil their stomach.... Fogstar shrugged his shoulders as he mentioned: If she really had seen Spottedleaf in her dream, there will be a reason to this Bur why didn't she visit your dreams and came to a kit instead?. Moonlight looked at the sky and answered honestly: I don't know Sometimes the will of Starclan is unfathomable for us and sometimes their meanings only clear up to us a lot later....

Before Moonlight could finish what he wanted to say, a heart wrenching cry filled the air. At once all cats rushed to the entrance where Lindenheart crouched shaken and petrified on the ground. Quickly they ran to her. What happened?, Fogstar wanted to know and Moonlight looked if she had hurt herself. Yet she just looked terrified at him and meowed shocked: My kits! I was just behind the bush to get a moss-ball for them to play with I told them to stay where they are but when I came back.... Violently shaking she stopped as she cowered terrified on the ground. In the meantime Starkit has arrived as well. Due to her small size she wasn't as quick as the others. Because she was so confused, she still had the herbs in her mouth.

Meanwhile Moonlight had looked after the kits, which laid on the ground and breathed heavily. After he discovered something red lying next to them on the ground, he screamed shocked: These are Deadly Nightshade!, and called some Warriors: Bring me the Yarrow from my Den. They are still lying in front of the entrance Quick! The kits need to get the Berries out as soon as possible!. With this said, he turned to the lifeless kits and tried to fish out some of the chewed berries from their mouth, using his paws. But they were still very small and his paw barely fit in their mouths, so he couldn't get out much of it.
Starkit stood there in shock and wasn't able to grasp the situation. Suddenly she smelled the cat she had met in her dream again. It reminded her of the herbs she had been told to collect and still had with her. Quickly she ran to Moonlight and dropped the herbs in front of him. Are these the herbs? Can these help as well?, she asked anxious. She hadn't forgotten her mistake the last time when she brought the wrong plant without knowing.

Moonlight turned to Starkit and looked at the herbs. Yeah right You got some.... he nodded absent-mindedly and took the herbs without saying another word to feed them to the kits. Because they weren't really responding, he had to chew the herbs for them and forced them with his paw into their mouths, so they would swallow it. Soon three out of the four kits started to gag and vomited the Deadly Nightshade Berries. They seemed to be better right after it, even though they still didn't react to anything around them. Moonlight knew they would still need to be taken care of for some time, before they truly would be better again. The faster they vomited the berries, the greater was the chance of them getting better again. After those three were tend to as much as he could right know, he concentrated on the last kit. It hadn't vomited yet and just laid still while it's breathing grew strained more and more.

Unsettled and scared, Starkit ran to Fogstar and asked: Did I do something wrong? Did I get the wrong herbs again? Is it my fault when Beechkit dies?. He looked worried at the kit, but tried to calm her down by consolingly licking her ears and meowed: No, it's not your fault. Without the herbs right here, Moonlight wouldn't had be able to help them so fast. With these words, he nodded to the Warrior who arrived just heartbeats ago with the herbs from his den. He insured her: Moonlight could help them so fast, because you gave him the herbs. You did well. But Beechkit doesn't look fine! She's dying!, Starkit contradicted lamenting and crouched insecurely at the ground. With a quite sigh Fogstar looked at the young cat and waved with his tail, so Flakesblossom would come and look after her. He hoped her mother could calm and console her.

While Flakesblossom licked reassuringly Starkits fur, all other cats still looked worried to Beechkit. Once again Moonlight forced the kit to swallow some of the herbs, but it didn't seem to react to it this time as well. Sighing Moonlight began to think it was to late for her, when he heard a quiet, nearly inaudible gag. He turned back to Beechkit, who now started vomiting weakly. Relieved Moonlight gave her some more herbs and after he was sure she got all the berries out, he looked at her once more, before he told some warriors to bring the kits to his den, where he would look after them for the next few sunrises. He ordered them to help Lindenheart to his den as well. She shook violently and didn't seem to be able to hold herself on her paws at the moment. Her mate Dropsfoot and Lightstripe, one of the Elders, helped her on the way to his den.

Moonlight himself took Beechkit with him, to have a close look at the weak kit while bringing it back to his den and her family. Back at his place, he saw that the warriors had made Lindenheart a nest by his Den and the other three kits already laid by her. Moonlight carefully laid the last kitten to her and gave her some Valerian to calm her down. He would look after the kits for the next time and keep an eye on them. At least three of them should be feeling fine again after a few sunrises. He was still worried about the last one, but he hoped it would be fine as well.

After Lindenheart and her kits where taken care of, Fogstar waved Starkit to him and brought her to Moonlight. He told him: Maybe you should give her something as well. She's still shaking. Starkit hadn't realized herself that she still was shaken by all that had happened. Moonlight gave her some Thyme and sat down next to her and Fogstar. He nodded at his Leader and looked at her.

You did well. Without the herbs you brought me, I couldn't had helped them as quickly. And especially Beechkit might not had survived. Thank you, he meowed seriously. Confused Starkit looked at him. She was sure to get scolded and was still shocked by the events. Fogstar looked at Moonlight. She said she had shared her dreams with Starclan-Cats. Medicine Cats nonetheless Do you think she could?, he asked his Medicine Cat without really ending his sentence. Confused Starkit looked at them. What where they talking about?

Moonlight thought for a while and looked at the sky. After all that had happened, the first Starclan Warriors started to show themselves in the darkening sky. It seemed like he could see more than just the stars, that Fogstar and Starkit were able to see. Starkit felt like he had sat there for moons without saying a word. But after some time he gave Fogstar a nearly invisible nod and spoke to Starkit: You were a great help to me. In a few days you will be an Apprentice and you already had spoken with Starclan-Cats, like only Leaders or Medicine Cats do normally. This happens only rarely and shows us, that the Starclan has chosen you to meet with them. Maybe in the same way as I do as a Medicine Cat Could you imagine to learn everything about herbs and remedies and be my Apprentice? Confused she looked at him. Was he serious?

Starkit looked at the small kittens, laying next to their mother in the fern nest and sleeping. She thought for a few heartbeats. Afterwards, she looked at Moonlight and asked: If I do, can I help other cats like you do?. Moonlight nodded and answered her seriously: A Medicine Cat has to learn a lot to be able to help others. We share tongues with Starclan and have to interpret their will. As Medicine Cat others expect you to be calm and don't panic whatever happens. We have to act fast and can't hesitate, because sometime a cats life depends on how fast we can help them. And you know that Medicine Cats aren't allowed to have a Mate or Kits. The time as Medicine Cat Apprentice can be really hard. After all one must learn everything and need to know what to do, so we don't make mistakes that can cost lives. AS Medicine Cat you have to give up a lot, but in exchange you get the gift and honour of sharing tongues with Starclan and receiving their signs. Do you like to learn all about healing and the Starclan, despite all of this?.

With big eyes, she starred at Moonlight and asked: Am I allowed to?. A few heartbeats she sat still and silent in confusion, before she shook his head to clear her thoughts. She sat up straight and looked at the two tomcats in front of her as she answered: Yeah, I want that! I want to help others. I want to help my brothers when they get hurt during training, the Elder when they get sick and I want to share tongues with the Starclan. Even if it means I have to learn a lot. Please let me be a Medicine Cat Apprentice!.
With a serious face and bright eyes, she looked at them. Fogstar and Moonlight nodded slowly, whereupon her Leader meowed: If you are sure, Moonlight will take you as his Apprentice. Starkit nodded once more, before she got back to her mother afterwards and told her: Mama, I will be a Medicine Cat. Fogstar and Moonlight told me I can.
