To make them 'free' you have to price them at one gold at least to make them available. If you leave it at 0 the game takes that to mean you're not selling them. Just a friendly tip :)

Hey pal, y'know what? I think most of my pets recover soon so if you like I can give you some eggs from some of my pets. Keep those and let them hatch so that you can use them for breeding for stuff like this, kay?
