Everybody always thought angels were immortal. That's how they're supposed to be. This fact has never been questioned.. until now.
Angels have started getting sick. Nobody even knew that was possible. It's some sort of viral disease, and several have already died from it. It's not just angels, either. Spirits, souls, and even demons are dying from it as well.
For now, there's a temporary alliance between purgatory, heaven, and hell. Nobody really has a choice- they could all die if they don't join forces on this. Not everybody is happy with this, but some actually enjoy the fact of this- many have friends they never thought they'd see again.
However, the happiness won't last- the chaotic souls from purgatory want to help destroy everybody, and along with groups of rebellious angels, demons, and spirits, they could be the ones that end up destroying the entire afterlife instead of the sickness.

Angels: Honestly, who the heck doesn't know what an angel is? Although in this universe they're not inherently good.
Spirits: Wisps of emotions- positive emotions, which are from heaven, negative, which are from hell, and ones that don't fit in either category, which are from purgatory.
Souls- Dead things, basically. Dead humans, dead pets, etc. Good humans go to heaven, and most bad humans go to purgatory until they feel guilt for their actions. Extremely bad people go to hell, but these people are practically nonexistent.
Demons- Creatures of hell. Sort of like angels, they're not inherently evil. In fact, very few are- that's just a stereotype. They're more like police; they prevent evil souls from escaping, and are incredibly resilient because of this job.
*Interestingly enough, people can procreate in the afterlife. Angels are born from angels, demons from demons, and spirits from spirits. If two souls have children, it's a sort of wildcard- their child will be one of the latter three.
*If somebody under the age of 10 dies, they become an angel or demon, depending on how brave they are. They will grow to an adult in that form and stay at the normal, '20 forever' form.
*Normally it isn't possible, but for the moment everybody can go between purgatory, heaven, and hell. However, people in hell need to be escorted by demons, in case a soul escapes.
*Souls have a weird sort of physical body. They can be as living or dead as they want- they can allow themselves to feel hunger, pain, or emotions, or they can block it. They can interact with people, or they can be as un-physical as air.
The Sickness:
The sickness is being called Un-immortality. It has several stages, which surprisingly vary in severity, and not in order of number.
Stage one: Coughing and a fever. Maybe a runny nose and sore throat. Seems like a cold, except there's always a fever included. This fever is usually small.
Stage two: Fever rises to 103. Coughing gets worse, but the other symptoms of a cold tend to go away.
Stage three: Person starts to become dazed and confused. Fever rises further. Coughing stops. Possible memory loss.
Stage four: Memory loss, if it wasn't happening before, ensues and becomes severe. Fever becomes deathly high. Coughing resumes and it too gets severe. Most die at this stage.
Stage five: All senses start to fade- blindness, hearing loss, loss of feeling in body. If they are not already dead, they will become comatose, and eventually their vital organs will start to slow functions, killing them.

Personality: He's a curious soul, with a mellow temperament. He likes to be in tune with nature and tends to be very quiet if nothing is captivating his attention.
Backstory: His cousin Enrique was his best friend, and Manuel had a very close family.
How they died: He died in a Mexican plaza (1940), committing suicide by drowning in a fountain. Enrique's voice calling his name in horror was his last memory of life.

Backstory: She lived in a high born family during revolutionary era France. Her parents were strict, but she had a nice connection with them.
How they died: Drowned with her family in a sunken barge in the Liore River by Jean-Baptiste Carrier.

Backstory: Her parents fell to the sickness soon after she was born, and she never learned how to fly. Her foster parents, who are both souls, care quite a lot for her but are of course unable to teach her.
