I've seen it slowly collect in the overlay on my profile... what is it? Is it a form of currency...? Or experience points? And if it is a form of currency, what's it go to, and what am I doing to collect it...?

AP is Advancement Points- gained for progressing the plot, battling, nurturing, that kind of stuff.
reaching 10000 AP unlocks the ability to hire a stablehand
you can use AP to:
- buy base avatar stuff (non-item avatar stuff)
- buy more save slots in the generator
- buy more party presave slots on the party page
