I feel really stupid about asking this stuff, but this has confused me a lot.

firstly, I have no idea how to use level up points. I read something saying you get 4 for every level, but I have no idea how to use them (unless they're talking about proficiency points and level up points is just another name)

Another thing that wasn't explained to me very well is the maturity value on my pet. My starter pet is still an adolescent and her maturity value says something like (257/648), but the other adolescent pets I've captured from the wild don't display these numbers and I don't understand how it's measured. Also, how do I increase it so that she becomes an adult? I wanted to breed her with one of my other pets but she's apparently too young.

Level up points no longer exist- they and the old proficiency system were overhauled into the new proficiency system.

Maturity tells the pet what maturity it is, as opposed to the age-since-creation of a pet.

Generated pets (including Starters) automatically show all their details, but Tamed, Exclusive, and Offspring pets need to be Gene Tested for them to show Maturity Hours and Hidden and Carried traits.
We have a breakdown of maturity hours here (post 5)

648mh is when a pet goes from Adolescence to Adulthood- Your starter is 257mh old.

Pets get one mh per hour of time, but can be aged faster via various means outlined in the linked post that depend on the pet's current stage of life.
For an Adolescent, that's basically Magical Pies (I'm not 100% sure if Page Views have any affect on the maturity of adolescent pets)
