When you go to the wardrobe, any item you don't currently own has a little magnifying glass in the bottom right corner. If you click that, you can preview that item on your avatar. In this way, you can build your dream avatar. You just can't save it, since you don't own the items (most people copy the image and post it somewhere as a reference for themselves).
