I was just unsure what advancement points were, could someone explain what they are.

They're a form of currency earned when battling. Currently all you can do with them (Unless this has been changed) is buy things in your wardrobe. (Basic clothes, hair, etc. Not the special fancy stuff.)

not completely true- AP are also used to buy extra design save slots in the generator and party preselect saves on the Party page.
Additionally, passing 10k AP (just passing it, not having) unlocks the ability to hire a stablehand for your stables
You get them for things like advancing the plot, battling enemies (as long as their level isn't too far below yours), nurturing pets (10 nurtures = 1AP I think?), maybe breeding? Stuff like that.
