I thought pets with a star and a name were themed but apparently I'm wrong. Can anyone explain which is which and what is the difference?

Those are all themed pets

"Tagged" used to refer specifically to Gen1 Themes (Wild caught/ made via fest activity like Brewing/ wond from Battle or Nurture boards kinda thing) as they were the only ones with their theme name in their genetics section.
Purebreeds could not be searched for via Advanced Search.

However, just this year Purebreed pets have also been given tags in their info- it used to be that keeping track was something the users had to do, by looking back through a pet's whole lineage to find the g1's (Tagged Themes are marked withe gold star in the lineage that when hovered over with mouse tooltips up the theme name) (There were a few people knocked off kilter when it was integrated, because some pets they thought were PB and that were major parts of their breeding projects were actually descended from fake versions of themes that people had made with Essences)


Themed pet:
Typically refers to G1 when used alone, but can also refer to PBs

G1 pets have a Gold star and purple text in their Genetics section like this:

PB/ Purebreed/ Purebred/ PB Theme:
Pets descended from pets all of a single theme

These days they are denoted by a blue star and text tag like this:

Thank you for the explanation, all the stars and colors on site are confusing. Now if I can only figure out the star system on wild pets when battling.

we have a guide page to that here (post 3) (the thread in itself is a bit of a mess and incomplete at the moment, in dire need of us getting on with it and then reorganizing and breaking things into smaller easier chunks, but the section on star colour and number is complete)
