You can purchase them with Gold from other players via the Currency Exchange.

You either pay gold upfront for other people's diamonds (which those other people would be selling, at their prices of choice) or you make offers of gold for other people's diamonds (which people looking to sell their diamonds could buy with diamonds. If you're competitive- i.e. actually make good offers- this one works too.)

You can, if you're wise and earn a lot of gold to sell, make a lot of diamonds this way- I currently have 9k diamonds and have never been able to spend any money on the game.
