You can also farm for gold by going to a place like the troll caverns or Fungus Grove in the Viridian Meadows, retreating every time you run into an enemy and opening every chest. Repetitive, but you can get a couple thousand in less than a half hour doing that. Just make sure to only do it after you've completed quests in the area or you could miss some things.
