I have been away for awhile and was wondering what is going on with the trait system.

for example on this pet https://www.sylestia.com/view/pets/?petid=1863915 what is with the different colors? (Green, blue, and purple) also the letters? (AA, NA, BB). How can I tell a vis from a carry now?

how long is a while, it's been that way for as long as I can remember and I joined in 2014

Gene One: (NA) Banded Stripes
Gene Two: (BB) Fallow Deer
Gene Three: (NA) Advanced Runes
Mutation One: (AA) Tri Tails
Mutation Two: (EJ) Ball Mask
Mutation Three: (BB) Comet Moth Wings

Colour tells if it's vis/vis with hidden/carry (see: Section 9 Visible Traits, Carried Traits, Hidden Traits)
Blue is Vis with no Hidden on a Tested pet, and any visible trait on an Untested pet.
Green is Carry,
Purple is trait slot with a Hidden trait.

Letter is the trait's dominance in that trait slot, and you can check them in the Generator

So that Nixi is

Gene One: Carried Banded Stripes
Gene Two: Visible Fallow Deer
Gene Three: Carried Advanced Runes
Mutation One: Visible Tri Tails
Mutation Two: Visible Ball Mask with Hidden Spirit Flames
Mutation Three: Visible Comet Moth Wings

I don't think it actually is that long at all, seeings as you have pets with traits that would have instigated regens in them if they'd had them pre-revamp, and pets with traits that are definitely newer than 2014 (case in point, any nixi with Spirit Wings like this girl, seeings as that's one of the traits we designed)
