i started about 4 hours ago and already forgot, is there a way to change my active pet?

I assume you mean the ones you bring into battle? It's through the "party" screen under Explore. Press the "-" symbol to remove them, and then switch them for a different pet through your list and press the "+" button. You may need to scroll down to find it. Then, press "set party".

ah actually i meant the one on the side of the website how would i change that to another one of my pets?

That's actually the leader of your party, which is the left-most.
