The only difference I know of is what they stand for. RPG stands for Role Play Game, while RP stands for Role Play. I'm guessing (so don't take my word for it) that RPGs are actual games, with real pieces (or online pieces) and an instruction manual, and RPs are just people talking out a story playing as different characters. That's my guess.

On Sylestia, an RPG is narrator-based, and generally just interaction between a player and the person who runs the RPG. A Sylestia RP, however, is generally run by everyone (to my knowledge) as they interact, with the game runner introducing plot points and major events as they see fit.
