The Joy of Designing: Workshop Two
Contestant Deadline: 5/13

Hello all ~

Alongside the Joy of Designing Contest, I will be holding some design workshops. These workshops are open to everyone, so please feel free to join in. All contestants who participate in the workshop will earn an additional vote on their designs for the week! There are two types of workshops: one focuses on developing design skills, while the other focuses on giving back to the community. (: If you choose to participate, I'd love to see what you come up with - please feel free to post!

Tips and Tricks: Ny'vene Designs

This week's workshop is going to aid in your ability to design Ny'venes all while giving back to the community. (: Please note any designs created in this workshop cannot be used in the contest!

One of our own contestants, Fox, has a passion for Ny'venes - matter of fact they have several they are looking for regen possibilities for! So this week, we are going to give back to the community a little and help Fox out. The workshop itself is going to outline some great tips and tricks for designing Ny'venes to help you out with your personal Ny'vene creations or helping Fox! (: Matter of fact - Fox is holding a contest to help with these vene redesigns - so there is an opportunity for you to get a little extra outside the competition. :P

The workshop is going to detail what color slots different traits can pull from, how to make the most of some of the vene traits, and what are some great trait combinations. (:

If you are a contestant: Please make a post on Fox's contest thread with your entries by 5/13 at 11:59pm. Your designs must be in alignment with Fox's contest rules and themes - Please check them!

Being regen friendly means you may only use the following traits:

G1: A-P
G2: A-D
G3: A-D
M1: A-I
M2: A-F, I-K
M3: A-C

What Color Slots Do Trait Slots Pull From?

These are the absolute basics about Ny'venes, but I do recommend just browsing through this section even if you're an experienced player!

The Base: The base colors of a trait-less Ny'vene pull from slots EC, C1, C2, and C3. The EC dictates eye color. C1 dictates outer body color. C2 dictates stomach color. C3 dictates base wing color. It is important to note that C1 and C2 have some areas of overlap where colors blend.

G1: The first gene slot utilizes the color slots G1 and C3.

G2: The second gene slot has the potential to utilize the color slots G2, EC, and C3.

G3: The third gene slot has the potential to utilize the color slots G3, EC, C2, and C3.

M1: The first mutation slot has the potential to utilize the color slots M1, EC, C2, and C3.

M2: The second mutation slot has the potential to utilize the color slots M2, EC, C2, and C3.

M3: The third mutation slot has the potential to utilize the color slots M3, EC, C2, and C3.

Traits and Their Advantages!

Gene One Slot:

The first gene slot is primarily used to create the basis of the body pattern. Because this slot also pulls from C3, it's important to make sure these colors go together well.

Dilopho Markings: This is a fairly minimal body trait, so if you don't want your vene body to be too busy, want the focal point to be the wings, or want to select a busier G2, this is a great trait to take! It also creates better separation between the stomach of the vene and the rest of the body.

Crested Lizard and Gabon Viper: These trait have the ability to create a gradient on the body through C3, while still bringing in some color through the G1 color.

Red Panda: This trait allows you to recreate the body of your vene. C1 and C2 now become accents. C3 is your new body color, while G1 becomes a more dominating stomach color. This trait is fantastic to use if you select your C2 in an effort to influence wing color instead of the stomach. It is also fabulous if you want a more subtle body or to make the G2 slot have a busier trait.

Fine Stripes: This trait reverses how we generally think of C1 and G1 colors on the bottom half of the vene. It's a large overlay over the body color that essentially takes on being the new body color while C1 becomes the accent or standout pattern on the bottom half of the vene.

Tiger Stripes, Leopard Spots, Marbled Tabby, and Yellow Anaconda: These traits dominate the original body color using C3 and G1 heavily, but they are great for creating color depth or high contrast. Yellow Anaconda is primarily dominated by G1 however.

Diamond Back and Saber-Toothed: They are the best for creating color depth or high contrast and adding in accents. They really allow for the original body color to come through and also utilize colors G1 and C3. Although because Saber-Toothed is so large, I admit Diamond Back is my favorite.

Caterpillar, Milk Snake, and Tropical: These are the best genes for creating color separation on the vene body, but not wildly popular.

Leaf Veins: Now leaf veins, may not be the most most popular gene, but it allows for the creation of a smooth color gradient top to bottom and serves as a great setting to showcase a G2 trait.

Water Tabby and Night Glow: These two traits create a gradient on the body. Water Tabby has a more complex pattern on the top of C1 while Night Glow dominates majority of C1 - making it serve more as a color transition for the gene color to the stomach color.

Gene Two Slot:

This is the slot that adds the complexity to the body - the metaphorical icing on the cake. It's great for highlights and bringing in accent colors.

Ancient Runes and Chaos Runes: These traits are fantastic for creating contrast against the body or making the body pattern more complex as the of the middle of the line rune options.

Magma Runes and Cosmos Runes: This are the most subtle of Ny'vene nonhighlight based vene runes. The Magma runes can provide a highlight or shadow on the back of the vene while the Cosmos runes provide a highlight or shadow in a more random fashion - just be aware this might come at the cost of some of the contrast

Lucky Runes: This is by far the busiest of the runes and probably one of the less popular choices, but best suited to create more interest on fairly subtle vene bodies or to minimize the business of the more complex G1 traits.

Petal Markings: This trait is based of EC and G2 colors and great for bringing in bright accent color(s) against lower contrast or dark vene bodies.

Night Glow: This trait is the Dilopho Markings of the highlight runes - subtle, but a great contour gene for the body.

Gene Three Slot:

This gene slot affects the wing slot and each trait is drastically different.

Cecropia Markings: This wing gene is fabulous for creating a bridge across various colors or a means of creating a beautiful gradient.

Red Admiral: This trait creates a beautiful gradient and covers majority of the original wing color which can be fantastic if you want to use C3 to affect other slots.

Nebula: This trait has a beautiful, unique aesthetic and the ability to incorporate 3 different colors - EC, C3, and G3.

Dusk Wings: These wings feature a transition between colors C2 and C3, while the G3 color is layered over the top to bring in another layer of interest - this is one of the busiest vene wings traits.

Lightning Wings:

Eyespots:

Tropical:

Mutation One Slot:

Back Spikes and Skeletal Armor:

Battle Armor:

Quad Arms:

Crystalline Gems:

Frozen Spikes and Essence of Flames:

Flowered Armor and Starlight Armor:

Cosmic Spikes:

Celestial Armor and Dragon Rider's Saddle:

Feathered Tail:

Mutation Two Slot:

Jeweled Horns and Ram Horns:

Ornate Horns:

Frozen Horns and Essence of Flames:

Rhino Horns:

Triceratops:

Cosmic Horns:

Battle Helm and Skeletal Helm:

Starlight Crown and Flowered Headpiece:

Dragon Rider's Bridle:

Mutation Three Slot:

Essence of Storms:

Essence of Wind:

Demonic Essence:

Crystalline Essence:

Torn Wings:

Gooey Wings:

Flowered Wing Wraps:
