I am stuck in the Garden of Magnates because my 3 level 42 pets hit a level 35 opponent with all they have and it only takes the opponent down maybe 15%. What do I need to beat these things so I can advance in the plot?
I am quickly losing interest

Only waiting 2 hours isn't giving us much of a chance to respond!
Can you link the pets you use inyour party, or describe your tactics?

How do I do a link?
I use ZarmaCyndal, Cyndal and Selvester if that helps.
I don't really have a strategy, I am new to this whole DOG and battling thing. I am kinda learning as I go

I don't understand why level 42s can't beat these level 35s
Maybe this just isn't the game for me

Your pets are using random equipment, instead of equipment that will help them properly in battle. You need to pay attention to how the statistics such as strength, dexterity, intelligence and agility and so on work, particularly for each individual elemental attunement for your pets to figure out what is best for them.
The air pet should have myrmidon gear that focuses on str/int, and should have two proficiency points in strength. Don't bother with health on any pet that isn't a tank pet.
You're also using 2 shadow pets, which are tanks. You should switch one of them to light for healing. You only need one tank. For the light healer I'd recommend two proficiency points in intelligence, and give the light pet evoker gear that focuses on int/dex.
For the remaining shadow pet you want illusionist gear that focuses on intelligence and agility.
