can someone explain how hidden traits work and if they actually have an effect on offspring traits?

If your pet has carried or hidden traits the offspring may inherit that trait instead of the visible one.
This may cause that trait to become visible instead.
Example:
Both parents have this:
G1: NA (Nothing) [A is carried]
G2: AB (A is visible) [B is hidden]
They could potentially (but rarely) have offspring like this:
G1: AA (A is visible)
G2: BB (B is visible)
