Newbie question from an old player; I took a long break from Sylestia and came back just recently. My question is: are monthly avatar items still released? I know things have probably been crazy with the new zone and all so I wasn't sure if the monthly items are on the backburner or not.

No. They have been discontinued indefinitely.
The value they brought into the game were slowly becoming less than the amount of effort and resources placed into making them. So the admins decided to discontinue them, and focus the resources on other things, such as revamping species, new festival features, the megazone, and relaunch of the game.
