But stuck on a pop-up that says I must select a valid trait for gene 2.
Are there traits in the list that arent available to newbies?

While I assume you figured it out, seeings as you have now created your starter, the trait you were trying to select was definitely Imperial Dragon Scales, a Restricted Trait, and the only Restricted trait aurs have in gene slot 2.
Restricted Traits, with only two exceptions, cannot be generated onto a pet at any time.
