Apologies if this is a dumb question, but: is it possible to preview possible breedings between one of your pets and someone else's in the same way that you can go to the breeding grounds and preview possible outcomes between two of your own?

no, it's not possible but it is possible to have a general idea. The more the parents colors are similar the less the offspring will have discolorations, a visible trait will alwais pass to the offspring ( often in carry) and if both parents have the same carry you may get it in visible on the offspring.
