I had put a pet in my party, then took him out, but I gave him a relic while he was in my party. How do I take it off so I can give him to my friend? I've just gotten to trollsblight caverns, is that it? Do you have to reach a certain point to remove things?
(And yes my avatar is strange)

If you head to the Inventory and hit the Equipment button, you can go to your pet's page from the dropdown menu and remove it there.

It is the reverse process to equipping.
As Dragonnadder said, you have to be in the Equipment part of the Inventory.
You have to select your pet from the list and to remove the gear you click it
ON the pet and then you click an empty space in your equipment tab.
