I was wondering if my love pair male and female had to be identical, or if I could use different traits/colors and just keep the species. Can I use different traits?

they can be different as long as they are the same speacie and that they respect the general theme i think, you should ask Krin to be compleatly sure. ^-^

No. They do not have to be identical. Obviously, they do have to be the same species though.
