It would be fantastic if on the leaderboards it said somewhere more obviously and in more detail that you gain a point for the species in your party that defeats the enemy. I know it currently says "Counts per Pet in Party per Enemy." but it's in small print and is not very descriptive. Above it says "(Species) - Enemies Defeated" which further insinuates that you must defeat that species in order to gain points but of course that is not the case.
I know that I was quite confused by it until I gained clarification from my peers, and every single fest there are tons of players frustrated by finding this out too late to get on the board. All we need is a little welcome message at the top that goes into just a bit more detail and I think there would be way less confusion.

Yes I will admit this confused me a lot, I wondered why there would be battle leaderboards for pets not in the Fest Zone. I didn't ask but I think when checking out nurture numbers for Ryori I realised I had battle points as well and figured it out.
