APs stand for Advancement Points, and are used to unlock new things.
Examples of what it can unlock:
- stuff in the wardrobe in base/styles/clothing section (ie eyes, hair, facial stuff, basic clothes)
- generator slots (when you click "save design", you get an option to buy slots for AP)
- party slots
