Prologue
"Acrid, you're my best friend," an adolescent draeyl declared. He smiled at the Aeridini sitting beside him.
Acrid smiled at the draeyl. "I'm glad we are. All this stress from my father, the king, is weighing on me. You lift the burden from my shoulders."
The draeyl nodded in reply. He looked up at the blue sky above them. "You're going to make a great king someday, Acrid," he said.
"You really think so, Greg?"
"Yeah."
The Aeridini looked up at the sky as well. He let out a dreamy sigh. Then he shifted his gaze to Greg.
Greg looked at him expectantly. "Well? What are you looking at me for?"
"I am so-" Acrid began, but was cut off by someone calling his name.
They both turned to see a Bulbori waving for Acrid to come. "It is time to go home," she called.
"Good bye, Acrid. I hope we can get together again soon." The draeyl hugged the Aeridini.
Acrid hugged him back, then pulled away. "Good bye, Gregory. I hope for that as well."
With that, the two friends parted ways. The Aeridini got into his carriage taking him back home and the Draeyl headed back to his town.
It would be many years before they ever saw each other again. Many, many years.
