I have been on a year long hiatus and I can't remember how to get the stuff to generate pets, could someone please help me!

those item are called essence, you can get them preaty rarely by doing comon stuff like sending pet in mission, nuriturnig eggs and hatcheling or in jinxy jambory. Otherwise you can buy them in the broaker or in the diamond shop, if you don't find what you are looking for you can ask in the item auction.
Ps: a lot of pets have been revamp recently, if you have a project in mind i recomend you checking if the speacie / trait match those who were avalable from the pre revamp, i can help you with the traits as i have preaty mutch memorized the list of trait for kelp, ny'vern and puff. ^-^
