you can get an essence by buying it on the trade broker or the diamond shop, win it in Jinxie's jamboree, or get it from a battle, even though the last one has not happened to me before, but, that's what the generator says

I've gotten a Qitari essence in trollsblight caverns before, so it is indeed possible.

You can also find one in a misson / event snatchell, though it's rare.
I've also found some essences while nurturing pets.
If you don't have enough money to buy an essence, I think the easier way is to try to win one at Jinxie's Jamboree, it may take you some time but you're almost sure to win a essence at some point.

Also apparently you can get them from the treasure chest you get at the end of dungeons (Amarok got an essence from the end-of-the-dungeon chest a few hours ago, and I was mindboggled)?
This one is I think belongs of the list as 'completely random' and 'exceedingly rare'
