It happened to me on the real Eggling Auction yesterday, where I was on the road (forced to be anyways) and I had to keep up with the auction on my phone. Crashed at the very last second, where snipes were going wild. :c
Think of it this way -- you get to keep your gold for something else. o:

Guys, the auction is over. Please do not become upset if you did not get your pet. Everything went fairly, according to the rules and time I set. There are other people still selling Patriotic pets, so don't give up
