Description:

These cats have been here their entire life.
They were born here. They will die here.
But what happens when a sudden electric shutdown releases these felines from their lifelong containment, allowing them to escape out into the open world, given a new chance with life?

We'll just have to find out.
Many things are to be discovered and many others are to be found, all different and unique in their own way, and they'll learn about this world they've never known about, a world with grass and trees and fresh air, and water and the warm, shining sun.
These cats will survive together through thin and thick, and with the help of each other, will uncover much, much more than they expected.

A/N:
I'm just going to mention these cats, at first, don't know a lot about the outside world. They don't know what birds or fish are properly called. Also, this is NOT a Warrior Cats story. These cats use human terms. They have different ranks and factions, and we even roleplay dogs and mutant cats in the RP Group.

Prologue

The bombay opened his eyes. Darkness. He couldn't see anything. A small, tiny, spot of light shined through the corner of his cell. The desperate cries and meows of his fellow Tainted tortured his ears, and by each minute the screams of pain grew. A cat was having a wing of a bird sewn onto it's back. Another was being shocked by electricity. He heard these sounds daily, and he had grown used to it. He sighed, and looked down on his pendant. It was simply a vial of black sand. But it meant oh, so much more to him. He got up, and then stumbled. He must of recently been sedated for a test. His fur was matted, and grimy. Struggling to stand, the bombay trudged to the side of his cell, and peered through the tiny crack in the wall.

He sighed. She wasn't there. Light shined brightly into the steel cell, and a giver's hands reached in. He succumbed, and let the hands take him. Hundreds and hundreds of cats, all in isles of cages and cells with no openings. Their only oxygen source was supplied from vents at the back of the steel boxes, and they were only cleaned once in five months. He was carried away from the cages, and into an isolated room down the hall and past several isles. He was vertically set down on a table, and was strapped down by tight leather bands. The givers turned their back, and prepared the needle. He could see one of them dip it in a vial of blood, and then it turned around. He closed his eyes and held his head firm down on the freezing metal beneath him. The giver with the needle stepped beside the table, and hovered it's hands over his flank. It then slipped the needle beneath his skin, and the tomcat clenched his teeth. A milliliter of a foreign, and presumably dead, cat's blood was injected into his veins. He hissed in pain as the needle was slowly removed and a giver grabbed a wet wipe and brushed it against the area of fur, and then held down some cotton that soaked up any blood that oozed out the entry site. One of them logged something down on paper. This time, they didn't sedate him. Soon enough, the straps were unlocked, and he was being picked up and carried to his cell. This had been his daily routine. Barely nothing changed. This was his life, and it was going to stay this way. Forever.

..right?

~

The cat bowed her neck, allowing her pendant to connect the impression on the machine. It lit up, and a dead, and close to rotting, 'thing with wings' fell down from a chute in the corner of the room. The white cat hurried over and took a bite, but it was immediately sucked back up before she could take anymore. She sighed and trotted back over to the machine, where three lights blinked underneath the three impressions. They blinked fast, and one of them was colored bright red. She watched the lights shine closely, until they stopped. The cat hesitantly positioned her light bulb pendant over the first one.. It buzzed. She looked down, realizing what was going to happen. The white shecat was shocked with electricity.

It connected with her fur at her flank, and painfully spread across her body. She yowled and once the long electric shock was over, she fell on the ground. The very tips of her white fur was singed black, and a bit of smoke wisped off those areas. Heaving and meowing with pain, she was instructed to get up and continue testing. She hesitantly struggled to stand, but finally managed to. Once more, the lights blinked repeatedly. She let her bulb hover under the last indentation, and got it right. Then, the cat hurried into the corner to retrieve her reward, a mouse this time. She took a bite, and pulled it more into the room so that it couldn't be sucked up. She hurried and ate the entire thing, enjoying every bit of it.

This was the first complete food item she had gotten in months. Her light gold paws were the first thing to be touched by electricity this time. She cried out, jumping and falling onto the ground. She was given a much longer shock, this time a painful 17 seconds, and fainted. The next thing she remembered was being waking up in her cell. As soon as she realized where she was, she turned around and peered through the crack in the corner. "Hello? Are you there?" She spoke up, staring at the cat in the other holding chamber. He turned, and looked at her through the crack. "Samantha, it's wonderful to see you." He purred. She, and few other cats were the only things he lived for. If they weren't here, he would of let himself die. They were the only things he enjoyed, the only things that mattered to him. "Have you been testing with Enki?" He supposed, "No, but guess what!"

The cat, Samantha, said eagerly. "What is it?" The bombay responded, lifting one of his russet paws and sitting down. "I managed to eat a whole mouse!" She exclaimed, "You're so lucky, Sam!" He meowed, "You should probably rest.. I see you've been shocked." He replied, eyeing the singed fur on her legs that was visible through the cracks. Samantha nodded, and placed her head on her golden paws. "Sleep well, alright?" He sighed, "Jackson.. We're going to escape one day. I just know it. One day or another, we'll all be free.." She said, with her eyes closed. Samantha was so.. so hopeful. Hope is something Jackson wished he had. He wished he could feel how she could, and feel that they would get out, and they would be free. Jackson simply couldn't see it happening. The bombay sighed, and laid down.

One day, we'll all be free. I just know it, Jackson. He repeated over and over in his mind. Soon enough, he fell asleep. One day..

Chapter One

( I think the researchers should probably get new ways to open doors.. heh. Anyways, enjoy the first chapter of Tainted Veins! )

The glowing cat seemed dazed as he walked down the dark hallway, he stumbled as the horrored humans lead him back to the dark place called his cage. He was glowing bright red, which meant he was either in pain or furious. He was both.

In the cage next to him lay a small shecat named Vixen, she was a ginger and white cat. Currently she was staggering to the back of her cage, near the vents. Loud, and violent coughs came from her. She had bddn trapped and succumbed to a room full of smoke, which had begun to cause irritation in her throat.

This sparked the orange and blue eyed cat's interest, he wanted to learn who she was but, the tom was roughly shoved into his cage, he unleashed his long talon like-claws. Some of the floor in the cage began icy and slick. A loud yowl came from him as the humans had touched him with something that stung his pelt. It began causing him severe pain.

Vixen's ears perked as she heard the loud yowl coming from this unfamiliar cat. She swayed to another side of the gloomy cage, her glittering green eyes now dull. Fear striking through her.

The tom would waited for a reaction from any of the other cats, but nothing.

Samantha called out to him from the vents,"Enki? Are you over there?" She felt quite nervous for him, as this happened daily, punishments even if he didn't do anything wrong.

"I'm here..." He croaked, pain flowing through him.

As if it was on time, Vixen called out,"Sammy? Jack? You there?" Her coughs racked through her small body. She hadn't known who Enki was.

Samantha shivered, and backed up from the now cold oxygen vent. It was no longer a steel box, but an ice one. She said no more, knowing what was going to happen.

Enki's glowing body stopped glowing as his body shut down. He fell limp, all cats knew that he'd be fine in a few moments. This was just a game to the humans, they found it amusing he'd come back to life. It was his fourth time going through a stage of death that week.

The humans lost interest in him after he had awaken. They walked over to Vixen's cage, and opened the door. The humans grabbed her almost as rough as they threw Enki, it made pain surge through her body causing her to hiss loudly. The white and ginger cat thrashed, struggling as she tried to get out of the grip, she knew it was no use.

"Don't fight back! It'll only make it worse!" Jackson called out, trying to sound helpful. Of course it turned out in a dreadful tone.

~

Enki arose from the floor of his cage. He watched Vixen be carried back to her cage. Her pelt was now wet, and clung to her fur. He shivered as he looked at her, pity ran through his veins. He heard a loud slamming of the door. The sound echoed through the facility, and halls. Every cat went dead silent, they were anxious to see who got taken first. Nobody did, they ended it for the day.

The white cat pressed her forehead against the cold wall, she knew what had happened, she let out a long, heavy sigh.

"Why do they kill me?" He muttered into the vents, sadness evident in his own voice. He could hear the gloomy words that came out of his mouth.

"I don't know..." Samantha said, frowning.

Vixen heard him, so she decided to reply, "They find it amusing to watch you die, then come alive again." She hated to admit it, but it was true. Enki didn't want to believe it.

All of a sudden, a crackling noise filled the air. It started quiet, but quickly it got louder and louder. All the cats seemed confused. And then, the lights began shutting off. One by one, with loud 'whooshes', almost, it got darker and darker.

And then, the cage doors, which were locked by an electric system, rolled upwards.

Enki didn't know what was happening, but at the same time, he did. His body did. His paws rushed to step out. He could feel the cold tile floor once more. It was quiet. So, so quiet. Samantha, Jackson, and Vixen would hurry up to him.

A few, tiny, almost inaudible words escaped Enki's mouth.

"We have to run."

Before Enki knew it, his paws were racing down the aisle. It was almost like a chain reaction. Dozens, and then what seemed like hundreds of other cats began to race and jump out their cages. The sounds of thundering paws filled everycat's ears. Samantha was running. So were Jackson, and of course Vixen. They didn't know where they were running, but at the same time, they did.

Enki hurried to the front door of the building, and jumped. He managed to press a button on the door frame. He always knew the humans went through it to get to the next sector of the facility. He had gotten out of his cage before, but only to be caught and placed back in it, just like other cats did, at least three every day, it seemed. His only friends in the entire world were following closely.

Samantha quickly jolted through the door with a quick movement, and dozens and dozens of cats followed. Jackson had terrible endurance, but he was trying to keep up. Enki would race up to Samantha and lead the cats out of the building. Samantha grew the smallest smile as she saw him, knowing he'd always take lead and guide them.

The parade of cats would rush and dash in a huge group, all together. They could hear something behind them, all of them. It, no, they took heavy steps and snarled and screeched and growled. They were running after them. Suddenly, Samantha could hear the painful wail of a cat. She knew one of them had to of been caught. She heard screeching, and then a loud snap. Samantha was horrified. She quickly shook the memory out of her head, but she could still hear the cracking and snapping of bones. She turned her head and looked over her shoulder. Nearly thirty of cat's dead bodies were laying in the path they had taken.

She could see their killers. They were giant. They had elongated muzzles, and these eyes that had no pupils, but burned into her fur. She knew they were all watching. More ran after them. Samantha would quickly turn her head forwards again. Escaping was the only thing on her mind now. The cats raced through another set of aisles and halls. More cats joined the giant group. They ran, and they ran, until finally, they came upon a broad doorway. They would race through it. Samantha heard the gasp of a single person. The mass of cats would stare forwards. All of a sudden, they saw light. Light shining through a big window. They didn't know what a window was, but they loved it now.

There was a metal door. A huge one. Another door. But, Samantha thought, if they stopped at the door, wouldn't they catch back up to them?

Samantha shook the thought out her head. She was determined to escape. She would accelerate and leap up, once more, slamming her paw with force against another button.

The cats were showered with light.

Without thinking, the entirety of the cats would dash outside. Outside.

They felt grass beneath their paws. It felt so weird, but it also felt amazing.

They'd form into groups, all of them. Sam, Jackson, Enki and Vixen would all walk together. They were heading towards what seemed to be a small mountain, far away in the distance. Although other cats were running, knowing the humans would be after them, our main four stayed together and walked.

Enki had forgotten about her. His sister. The one that lived four aisles away from his own cage. Pain struck through him as he watched all the cats gather up in groups. He couldn't seem to find her.

Vixen seemed to notice the tom, she padded over to him. She spoke softly,"Hey.. Whats wrong?"

Enki looked up,"I'm fine." He lied, forcing a smile.

"Tell me whats wrong.." Vixen said, persisting.

"Don't push it." Enki snapped, unleashing his claws. A burst of frost came from them.

Samantha noticed his outburst, "Tell us whats wrong, Enki." Vixen was cowering slightly, Enki sighed his eyes softening as he looked at Samantha.

"Its Ivy.." He muttered, looking down.

"Who's Ivy?" Vixen asked quietly.

"She's his sister. She was fine, though.. right?" Samantha would pause.

Enki spoke back up. "No. I can't find her. No. No, she has to be here. She is. Yes. I know it." Enki would say, beginning to talk to himself.

Vixen didn't respond. She said nothing.

"Guys, we should go..." Jackson murmured, swaying his tail.

Enki looked around. He stared at the wastelands in the far, far distance. He had been standing directly in front of the doorway. "Look out!" Jackson yelled to Enki. His ears perked in confusion. He was too late when he realized the dozens of cats were charging out the door- and directly at him. Before he could react, he was trampled by many pawsteps. It lasted for several seconds. Those cats must of been from Sector D, the sector farthest away from the escape route they had taken.

The cats began streaming and sprinting to different places. A large portion were headed to the mountain, while others set off to the direction of a forest valley.

Vixen's ears laid flat against her head, she padded over to Samantha. She had seen how terrified she was before. "Sam, you alright?" Vixen murmured. panting slightly.

"Heck yeah!" Samantha exclaimed, her electrifying blue eyes beaming with excitement.

"WE'RE FREE!" She shouted. Her voice was full of joy. Happiness. Jackson looked over at his lifelong friend. He would do something he rarely did when he was in the lab. Jackson smiled.

Our four friends began padding away, following the path of the cats heading for the mountain. Excitement, curiosity, and a tinge of nervousness running through their poisoned veins. It was now turning night as the sun settled on the horizon, pink and orange filled the sky. The perfect setting for them to be going off, feeling brave.

Chapter Two (sorry it's so short!

Tainted Veins

"We're going to the mountain, right??" Samantha would speak up. Jackson would slowly nod, and look at the other two. "I guess so," Enki would shrug. "The four began to pad down to the other cats who were assumingly going to there, too.

The sun began disappear beneath the horizon, the moon taking it's place high in the sky. The bombay, the ginger, the yellow and the black one would all stick together. As they neared the mountain with many other cats, a cave of sorts came into view, at the base of the mountain. The cats neared the mountain and in mere minutes they were standing before it. Samantha would stare up in amazement.

"It's so big.." She'd quietly say, half to herself. Enki, though, would leave the three that had paused to look up at the mountain and walked inside the cave. Half of the other cats from the lab had already gotten there.

Enki was the only light source, aside with the brightly shining moon outside. If he wasn't a glow cat they could possibly of been dead in darkness. They could hear the water dripping and their own paw steps.

Loud yowling filled their ears. There were tons of cats surrounding this upraised rock formation, all arguing and bickering. Samantha's eyes grew wide with simple curiosity as the three padded farther in. A pale yellow light was seen from the broad opening of the cave where they entered, and they stepped onto the slick ground which was

Enki's ears flattened to his skull, and he soon shouted, above the others, "What's going on here?!"

There was a sudden silence in the cave. Enki stepped forwards, causing a minuscule path to break up and open between the small sea of cats. He walked on through, and then looked up at cat with a weird, fleshy, wait, no, scaly tail. There were fins at the end. He didn't know what fins were, but geez, did that cat look crazy! Sure, he had seen cats with wings, and some that even had some sort of scales or something, but.. how weird, for a cat to have a tail like that. It didn't look like it was stitched onto the cat's body or anything. Enki didn't really mention his thoughts though.

"What's going on?" He repeated, calmer this time."They're all debating and fighting about who should lead.." The purple cat murmured in reply, staring out at the others. Enki would pause for a moment, looking down to think.

"Here's a question. Who is one of the most experienced people here?" He'd speak up. Multiple cats would speak above the others, insisting that they were.

"You probably think that, but if you want a leader, you'd want somebody that can handle situations. Someone who doesn't just think that they're the best." He'd huff the smallest bit. Samantha, Jackson, and Vixen would hurry through the crowd up to him.

"Someone like you, sir." A loud voice would speak up. It was a deep, purplish black cat this time. He had white lines beneath his eyes, which were a striking amber.

"I am Crashing Tides, leader of Crescent Edge." He'd continue. "If you haven't noticed, young cat, the words of wisdom you speak describe, in fact, yourself. I have been leading my faction for many years now, and I know a good ruler when I see one."

Enki took a moment to process this random cat's words. He realized now what he had said before, analyzing it once more in his mind with a quick process.

"I'm.. not sure. I mean.. I was really just pointing out that-" Enki would murmur. He was unsure of the idea, having to lead so many others.

"Hush. I know that these cats would do incredibly well under your rule. I can see it in you." Crash would insist. Enki looked back up.

"If you really believe so.. then I, well.. I guess maybe I will take the position." He'd say. Crashing would grow a feline smile.

"Good, good. I wish you luck.. oh, I haven't gotten your name?" The tomcat would say.

"Enki." He'd reply.

"Oh, there's a little something else~" Crash said.

"Enki, Leader of.. of..." he said. Enki paused.

"Enki. Leader of the Northern Stride." He said, speaking loudly with a bit of pride in his voice.

Chapter Three

It hadn't been long since the four of them had figured out the cave. It was quite large, and pretty. There was a small, flowing, and seemingly growing stream of water pooling up at the back of the cave into a shallow pond.

The area was split up into three sections. There was a place farther east of the mountain that was dark, casting little sunlight, and nonetheless mysterious. If one were to walk straight out the cave and keep the path for some amount of time, they'd be able to see a large lake of sorts, beside the mountain. The section on the westward side of the mountain was very beautiful, it was the valley-like forest. It was extremely green mostly because of the leaves, and the forest was very dense. Unlike the cave, it was very bright. On the other side of the cave was a mountain. A very tall one at that, it was snowy like it was made to have snow falling on it. It was.. Breathtaking.

<~>~<~>

Enki was sitting in the middle of the cave. Thinking was what he was doing. A white glow had formed around him, it replaced the yellow one. It wasn't long until Jackson was beside him, staring at the sky, you could he could tell he was thinking also. Next appeared a wild Samantha and Vixen had appeared next to the other two, glancing at each other. They were confused for what the two were doing.

Jackson snapped out of his daze, he glanced at Sam and Vixen. "What? Did we do something wrong? Are we gonna be lectured, or something?"

Once Enki heard the talking he did the same. "Maybe they were just admiring us, and how amazing we are."

Samantha scoffed slightly, she rolled her eyes. "Really? I didn't know you guys were amazing.. Oh, what a surprise, you aren't."

"-well, sure, maybe a little." She, quietly, added soon afterwards.

Vixen nodded in agreement. Enki and Jackson just seemed to brush off the teasing.

"Hey, Jackson?" Enki asked, looking over at his friend, best friend to be exact.

"Yes?" He asked, casting a glance at the cat next to him.

"Care to be my second in command?" The deep grey cat asked, a smiling making a way on his face

"Well, ehmn...." Jackson thought for a moment even though he knew his answer. "Of course. I'd love to, Enki."

Enki would smile at the bombay. He was happy. They were out of the lab. They had found a home. Heck, Enki had become a new leader. Enki swore he'd give his cats the best left they could wish for.

<~>~<~>

The calico cat would dive into the water, letting the cool fluid encase and flow around her. She would let it carry her for a moment before surfacing, pausing to check her necklace was still on. She reached out and climbed upon the sand, shaking her fur off for a moment. She glanced over at two other nekoi, a blue and gold one, and a yellow, black, and yellow one. She smiled and trotted over to them.

"Frozen, Akaei! Nice to see you!" She'd would speak. The blue nekoi would look up, recognizing the British accent. He had been freezing some sand into ice out of boredom. The other one, the black, yellow, and white one, would look at her too. "Oh, hiya! Want to help me and Frozen build an ice-sand castle??" She'd say, crawling out of the little hole she had made while digging, trotting up to Maple.

"Wait, how does that even work?" Maple asked, confused.

"Well, I dig up a 'buncha sand, and then Frozen constructs it into a sandcastle, and freezes it!"

"-wait, I was supposed to construct it into a sandcastle?" The blue nekoi would ask, tilting his head.

Akaei rolled her eyes. "Well, it's more fun than freezing random sand piles, as I see you've been doing." She huffed. Frozen didn't respond. Hey, have you two seen that new stream that's been branching off the river? Do you think it goes anywhere?" Maple would say, an excited tone in her voice. "Wait, there's a new stream? Where?" Akaei said. "Come on, come on!" The calico shecat would turn and start padding in the other direction, crossing another stream that had also branched off the main river.

Akaei quickly followed, while Frozen sighed and muttered a few inaudible words before catching up. Maple would look down at the new, small stream that was at the very end of the river that ran through the mountain. The river was also the center of the cave inside the mountain (take note, this was not the Northern Stride's cave). Akaei would looked down into the water of the stream, which seemed to be running into the wall of the cave. "I wonder if it's already made a path through the rock? Maybe there's an underwater tunnel it goes through!" Akaei exclaimed.

"Well, why don't we find out?" Frozen suggested, walking up behind them. "Let's dive under and see if there actually is a new tunnel."

"Freezie, that's a great idea!" Maple smiled.

"Don't call me that. Seriously, it doesn't even sound good. If anything, call me Frozenheart," he'd huff.

The calico didn't reply to him. "I'll go first!~" She'd speak up. All of a sudden, Maple jumped in, feet first. Sure, it was sort of shallow, but still deep enough for a Nekoi. Soon enough, Akaei and Frozen joined her in the water. Maple would lead them close to where the wall should of been underwater, and, sure enough, there was a tunnel leading to who knows where. Maple would swim forwards, her friends following soon after.

( A quick note: the Nekoi species belongs to Nekoi-Island and Kawiku on deviantart. Just put this here to give credit. )
