Under the Settings link at the About tab, you will find referral rewards.

To get the referral points, your friend has to reach a certain point in the game, in terms of battling, pets nurtured, and pets bred. I can't remember the exact number of each they have to do, but for the 3 categories, you can get a referral point each per person. So for each person you refer, you can get up to 3 points.
These points you can then use to increase your rewards in the game as stated above.
