I am new to the site and I don't understand the proficiency trees? What is the difference between the air, earth, fire, water, light and shadow trees? Am I better off pouring all my points into one of those trees or is it better to evenly distribute points between them?

It's best to pick one of the options, and focus on that one entirely.

As your pets level up and gain more points, the proficiency trees will unlock particular elemental abilities for special attacks.

Air: Focuses on Physical Damage, and specializes in damage-over-time effects with the Slash ability's Bleeding affect.

Earth: Focuses on Physical Damage, and specializes as a meat shield for other pets with the bash ability, which taunts the enemies to attack it instead of others. *Best give some health and agility as well since they'll be taking loads of damage.

Fire: Focuses on Magical Damage, and specializes in dealing damage to multiple enemies in one round with its Fireball ability.

Water: Focuses on Physical Damage, and specializes in boosting its physical defenses with its Bolt ability's passive Frost affect.

Light: Focuses on Magical Damage, and specializes in restoring health to your other pets in the team with its Beam ability.

Shadow: Focuses on Magical Damage, and specializes in stealing the enemies' health to regain its own hp through its Force ability's Siphoned effect.

Depending on what kind of damage the pet does, you'll either focus primarily in Strength for physical damage, or intellect for magical damage. It's also extremely important to make sure that your pets' relic items match the type of damage it needs. (Even if an item says "Assassin" and has added strength and agility for example, it may deal Magical Damage instead of Physical in which case it won't really help your pet much.)
