So, how many catalysts does it take start a brew?

Just one catalyst is all it takes :)
You start with the cauldron, fill it with broth, and add catalyst. Vials of blood will let you upgrade the amount of traits, and the rest of the additives will let you set a specific trait slot, boost the stats, pick the gender, and add a hidden/recessive trait.

Thanks for the help! Also, do you know of anyone who would be willing to sell a Vulnyx Tusks catalyst?

I would recommend these two threads and the control+f function if your browser has it. On Chrome it pops up a find menu where you can type in a few letters, and it goes through and highlights everything that matches. (So in your case, type "vul" for the find menu. ^^)
