I feel so stupid for asking this, but is there a way to turn off the sound in battle? I really want to listen to my music, but I can't with the battle tune playing!

Yep! It's easy to miss.
At the bottom right hand corner of the screen (in the battle window) is a little speaker icon. Click it once to disable sound. It will get a red line through it.
