I was told you don't even get to keep the pets or items you obtained while in there. Is this true? And if so, then what's the point?

The person you got your information from may have misread something somewhere. The MegaZone is a temporary zone while the site gets a revamp and will disappear from the game after the entire site revamp is completed but the pets and items we obtain will still be ours to keep.
