So I got a green staff for my character to wear during a mission I think. There was another item I got through the quests that I thought I could wear. I double clicked on it and it just vanished. I'm not sure how to put new clothes on my avatar, or where those items went. Help?

If you clicked on the avatar item and then clicked "Use", the items should be inside your wardrobe ready to be equipped. You can check the wardrobe under the "Account" tab. ^^ And from there, just select the category for the items, in the case of the staff, it would be under Items -> Helds

Is there a way to place the items I own first on the list so I don't have to dig around so much?

There's no way to do that for now. However, I believe Krin/Fai have said that the wardrobe will be made easier to use in the future. :)
