how do you hatch eggs? is there a button I'm missing or do you just need to wait?

Eggs hatch in about three days. When it's ready to hatch, a smaller egg icon will appear in the upper left corner. Clicking on its profile will bring up a prompt. If you help it hatch, it receives a bonus to helath, and if you let it hatch, it'll receive a bonus to one of it's other stats. Also, if you aren't able to do this, it will hatch eventually, but won't receive any bonuses.

What about the hatchling growing up?

Hatchlings become adolescents at 216 hours. So 216 hours minus 72 hours as an eggling means the pet will progress through the hatchling stage in 144 hours or approximately 6 days.

Eggs - 0 - 72 hours
Hatchling - 72 - 216 hours
Adolescent - 216 - 648 hours
Adults - 648 hours+

The "hours" are approximates as the hours do not continue to run during site downtime, etc and certain things (e.g. nurturing eggs, visiting the page of a hatchling) speed up the maturity process slightly.

what about starter and Generated Pets?

Not at all :)
If I recall correctly, Starter and Generator pets all start at 216 hours (i.e. as adolescences) so they'll have approximately 432 hours (approximately 18 days) until they are adults and can breed (648 hours - 216 hours = 432 hours).

if you want to translate that into days its:
Eggling - 0-3 days
Hatchling - 3-9 days
Adolescent - 9-27 days
Adult - 27+ days

or

Eggling - Hatchling = 3 days
Hatchling - Adolescent = 6 days
Adolescent - Adult = 16 days
