I just joined this game yesterday, but my map won't work. It has no links or words on it, just the white dotted lines.

Have you gone through the tutorial yet? You have to complete the first handful of steps in order to unlock the Exploration feature.

You can follow the tutorial by going through the pop up boxes in the bottom-right corner of each page.
